I am having some accuracy issues with my sks

I have a brand new chinese sks that groups about 10 inches at 50 yards. I am new to this type of rifle. Can anyone suggest a place to start?. Ammo is czech surplus from the big wooden box. thanks in advance for your help.

Are you a new shooter? The SKS is not a terribly accurate gun, but should do better than that. It could be as simple as a bad trigger technique by you. If this is your first rifle I'd say let an experienced shooter give it a go, that way you can rule the shooter out as the problem. If you are the problem, just get more trigger time and focus on proper technique like breathing and trigger squeeze.

If you are an experienced shooter and think that it is indeed the rifle, look for obvious things like a bad crown or poor rifling or a poor fitting stock.

On the SKS, the most comon culprits are the size of the front sight blade, which can be compensated for by shooting technique, and stock-to action fit.

With the rifle unloaded, have a friend tightly grab the buttstock and pul on the muzzle at the foresight. Then push back. If there is fore/aft movement, you need to shim the back of the stock inletting to tighten things up.

I suggest you take care of the basics first, before introducing different variables like an aftermarket stock, is the trigger horrible like a gate latch? If so, you might want to get an experienced gunsmith to give it a trigger job. Also try Privi Partisan 123 grain soft point, In my opinion, the CZ surplus ammo shoots way better in a Cz-858 type rifle than in an SKS, and my sks always shot better with Privi Partisan. You might want to experiment with bedding, for that you have to do some experimentation. Have fun be safe. It seems like everyone's got an opinion on how accurate sks's can be yadda yadda yadda blah blah blah.

Well the sks only has 100+ m on the sight. Try shooting at 100m/yards and post the result.

I think that it is a bit of rifle, and a bit of shooter

I used to shoot pretty well but I haven't shot an iron sighted rifle in 20 years. Even the C9 that I used in the army was scoped. The trigger is smooth but heavy and long. I haven't checked stock fit yet. The crown was rough when I got the rifle. And on further inspection one of the lands at the crown has a big chunk missing out of it. The bore is chrome lined. Any suggestions?. thanks in advance for your help.

Well I think you found the cause, in order to correct the problem it will have to be recrowned by a gunsmith.

I agree the rifle should group better but also keep in mind shooting surplus that it can vary round to round. I got a couple of boxes of hunting amo and my accuracy doubled with fine from a rest with bipod.

Are you shooting from a bench and is it on a rest? As a brand new shooter, I've been getting 2" groups at 50 meters with my Russian refurb off a bench, rested on some pillows. This is with Czech surplus ammo.

That's your first problem chinese SKS, my friend has three different types of sks's and he says the chinese one he has you cant hit #### all, we both have a russian sks and the groupings i get with iron sights are around 1-2 inches at 50 yards with some good practice. That's all the input i can afford to you, you should have spent a few extra bucks and gotten a russian sks or even a yugo sks which is the most accurate sks out of all of them, sure im not saying all chinese sks's r horrible some may be semi decent, but many are downright horrible

After scouring the internet for any and all info I could possibly read on SKS's, I actually found that most people were getting comparable groups with all makes of SKS rifles... the Chinese ones even edging the others out, Yugo and Russian included, more often than not.
