I am looking for a 'does everything' in one shotgun. I am looking to buy a shotgun that I can take hunting, take to the range, possibly skeet, trap etc.

I have just started my search but it looks the the Benelli Super Black Eagle 2 might be the shotgun that I am looking for. "First Impressions" ... this looks like the 'ideal' shotgun. Perhaps more than I was thinking of spending but I would rather buy one shotgun that 'does it all' instead of buying multiple shotguns, each with their own strengths.

I am interested in your thoughts.

I can't comment on the Benelli as I have no experience with it, but what about the Mossberg 500 or 535? You can get them in 2 or 3 combo barrel packages and they have an assortment of different stock options available.
 
I'd agree with your choice of a semi-automatic. For an all round gun it's the best choice IMO.

The Benelli SBE II is a superb waterfowler but with an inertia action set up for 3.5" shells it may not always function properly with light target loads used in clay shooting. Among the Benellis I think the M2 would be a better choice and I don't think you are giving up much going from 3.5" to 3".

The Benellis are inertia-operated actions and will have more felt recoil. Gas- operated guns such as the Berettas and Brownings are slightly more complex but are softer shooting. The gas actions will also handle a wider range of shell power.

One gun to do everything requires compromises. The jack of all trades is the master of none. For me to choose just one would be very painful but if forced to I'd take my Beretta 391 Urika.
 
A small (tiny to nothing?) consideration is the voice activated trap launcher at our range. It's been said by others than myself, that the semi-auto shotgun bolt slamming home on a shotshell into the chamber, will mistake it for the 'pull' command. Resulting in a lost bird most often.

That happens at our club too. I usually close my SX-1 when the shooter before me fires. Some pump guns will activate the voice calls too.
 
I bought a Remington 1100 - parts are easily gotten, reliable, tons of accessories (many accessories designed for the 870 also fit the 1100 and 11-87 semi-autos from Remington), spare barrels are plentiful (just post what you want on the EE) if you want to cut one down to 18.5". mine has a Limbsaver buttpad, soaks up heavier recoil. An older but beautiful one can often be had for $550 Canadian used. I shoot trap with a 30 inch full choke barrel, and have a 20inch short one for skeet, buck and slugs. They last for high miles, unless you plan on shooting huge numbers of magnum loads through it (then get the 11-87 or something else).

Alternatively, maybe the Benelli $Vinci ? Or the Beretta Xtrema2 ? Or a Mossberg 930? But for those three, I have no idea if spare, rifled or short cylinder barrels are available. But they do come highly regarded, and the 930 can 'ghost load', giving you one extra round legally in Canada. the 930's have quickly become a favorite of action shotgun competitors (for 3gun competitions).

No mention was made that it had to be a semi. It was asked for suggestions on 1 shotgun that does everything. The mossberg pumps can do everything and they are good value with 100s of aftermarket products for them. They even have a blackpowder barrel for muzzleloading. If he wants a semi I'd suggest the 930

Pump actions are certainly not optimum for skeet, which the OP specifically mentioned.
 
remington 870 is what you need you can shoot (with the right choke) birdshot,buckshot,slugs,and steel out of it (steel in the new one's only)

i have 3 of them cant go wrong with one you dnot need a rifled barrel, rifled slugs work good enough for deer,black bear, and moose even my home cast slugs do good enough for hunting

1 shotgun is all you need for every game around in the 20's and 30's all my great grandfather had was a double barrel you dont need 3.5" heck you dont even need 3"
2 3/4" shells is all i use for the most part
