I am looking for a reccomendation on bullet weight for elk

I will be shooting a 7mm rem mag and I would like some advice on bullet weight. My thought is for 160gr in a good bullet that will hold together and have good accuracy from my rifle at the best velocity for the bullet to perform well. Thank you in advance for your help. I will be applying for the first elk hunt in Ontario so I really can't say what what the range might be.

Yes, I would go with a 160 grain Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame, or Remington Corelok Ultra. You want something that still expands at longer distances, while still holding together at short distances.

I would probably go with a 160 gr bullet if it was lead cored, but you could go lighter with something like a solid copper Barnes TSX. A 140 gr TSX from a 7mm Mag. would be quite deadly on elk.

140 gr TSX or TTSX. 139 gr Hornady GMX. Those would be my choices in that order.

Can't go wrong with the 160/162 grain bullet weight. Shoots flat and retains a lot of energy. Partition, TSX, etc. is the way to go.

I would give a strong look to the 168 gr. Berger VLD. I've seen them shoot superbly from the 7mm Rem Mag and drop moose at over 600 yards.

I'd pick whichever 160 -175gr. bullet shot best in my rifle and go with that. When i used a 7mm Rem. the 175 gr. Hornady seemed to work best on game and was most accurate.

160 gr bullet in 7mm mag is never a mistake. IMO the best standard and inexpensive bullet for the job at task is....160gr Speer Mag Tip no question in my mind.

If you want don't want to waste meat go with the TSX or TTSX in a 130 or 140.It would be devastating in a 7mm.

Of the six elk that I killed with the various 7mm cartridges,I used 140gr bullets.The only 7mm bullet that I now use for elk is the 140gr TTSX.

I plan on using the 140 TSX in my 7x64 Brenneke for elk this fall.

I think any of the 150 160 or 175 would be good for elk in any of the premium bullet nosler barnes hornady ect. Its all about bullet placement.

What are the details on the elk hunt in Ont? I haven't lived there for over 25yrs, so this is of interest. Funny cuz when I was young there was very few geese, no turkey or elk and the deer in S.Ont were not as plentiful as now.

I have killed a few elk and been around as many elk have been shot and killed. They are tough animals, use a good bullet. My choice would be the same as SJ out of a 7mm.
