Yes sportsfans you all know that I'm all about the Norinco NP29 and my single stack 1911's. It's time to start climbing the learning curve once again. In my quest to learn more about Glocks before (where's Greentips ? He bugged me many years ago.) I take the plunge and spring for a 9mm G17.

Don't persuade me away from the 9mm since I like ONE caliber for handguns and I only reload for that one. :D So a G17 is the direction I'm heading into.

I am aware that Glock barrels don't like the lead bullets in the hexagon or whatever kind of rifling they use.

Can I fire Frontier Bullets (Copper plated lead) from a Glock barrel ?

If I must ONLY use factory loads, then I'll stick with my 1911 9mm's and therefore end my quest for G17. If I can shoot copper plated bullets then the quest continues.... OD Green, tritium night sights, here we go...

I've got a soft spot for OD green pistols....

Thanks for any of your experience and suggestions... Nope I'm no longer conisdering an XD9 since very few parts and tweaks can be purchased around here.

^^ Schweet picture I found. Its got polygonal rifling, say it with me "Po-ly-gon-al rifling" Good.

Anyways, ya you can fire the CMJs from your Glock just clean it well. After all it is ONLY A GLOCK, I hope your not buying it to look pretty.

isn't owning some plastic a pre-requisite to being a moderator?

fwiw, i've shot many copper plated reloads through my G22 with ZERO problems. stay away from non-jacketed bullets and you will be fine.

manboy: Thanks for the humour, but truth be told, I'm a 'dinosaur', can't you tell ? When all the other moderators are all about the black rifles with the LaRue hardware, I'm still tweaking M14's (main battle rifles). Okay, jokes aside, I do compete with black (really OD green) rifles and I don't own a single M14.

Greentips and Sparhawk have been making fun of me since 2005 pistol matches because I'm the only one who shows up with a 1911 and a Norinco at that. Holy Wonders, Batman!!!

So now I'm under a bit of pressure to start thinking about shooting some Tuperware and leave the 1911's for shzts and giggles.

manboy, I appreciate the feedback about being able to shoot CMJ bullets through the polygonal rifling. I'm gonna be looking for a G17 very soon. Yes, I am crossing over to the plastic side !!

go ahead and get it,its not a problem to reload for.as youre already hearing, glocks don,t like lead cast bullets as the chamber face tends to shave off a little from the force of the mag spring pushing the next cartridge up.very quickly an accumulation of lead builds up and impeads chambering or just stops.
jacketed bullets like hollow points work great.

Is copper plating the same as copper jacketing?

Yes and no. A full metal jacket (FMJ) has a copper jacket around the bullet but the base is exposed lead wheras a cased metal jacket has the copper jacket around the whole bullet including the base.

Sorry for the blurry pic but you should get the idea. The CMJ is a 230g .45ACP (left) and the FMJ is a 124g 9mm (right).

My apologies to Hungry for going off topic......

BTW, I shoot reloads out of my Glock 17, 124g FMJ with great results. :D

You should be fine with copper plated, but you still have to be a little careful with the (not fully supported) chamber.

here's a pic from ghostie's thread (G17- first from the left)

btw have you considered M&P? It's a better deal for the money -$150 cheaper (in US they go for the same price!)

also it has a fully supported chamber with standard rifling :)

Ah thankee.

Hungry, you should not buy ONE but TWO Glocks, that way you have a spare after the first KABOOM......:D

I love my Glock, it's a work horse, it ain't pretty (so they say) but ain't any worse than Norcs ;)

I thought bog-standard pricing on Glock and M&P was about C$750 each?

I believe Armco sells new 17's for about $750 when Gunnar has them, also Ellwood Epps has new Glox for $725 and up..they go for $650 or so from Police Ordnance in Ontario, but one is supposed to be Law Enforcement or Military to access that price.

Pontcanna: You are right about the pricing of the G17 at Police Ordnance for LEO & Mil Pers, active and retired. Very attractive. So I guess there was a good reason for beating up my knees in the Infantry. LOL :)

I don't think Hungry is going to be loading anything hotter than NATO loads, which to my knowledge hasn't caused any kabooms.

Glocks in 9mm are reliable, cheap(well there are cheaper alternatives) pistols that work. While I personally am not a huge fan of the grip like many here, it is hard to argue with it being functional and simple.

For current Glock money however, I might venture towards the Steyr but then again, Glock parts are found everywhere.

a shop in your neighbourhood has M&P in 9mm for $650.

Hungry, handle the M&P before you buy a Glock, much, much better handling!!!!!
better trigger too!!!!

And that includes Trijicon night sights on the G17's, Hungry. They work very well, IMO.

You're fine with jacketed or plated bullets in a Glock.....and cleaning the ploygonal rifling is a snap.

If you are comfortable with the Glock grip angle you are going to love your G17.

NATO ammo uses new brass, while reloading will weaken it over time. Tired brass may burst in the unsupported area...
