hello every one, i have a weatherby vangured that shoots pretty well. i probably have around 300 rounds through it. today i was shooting a 220 yards with some cheap 5.56 mm M193 military ammo made in north korea and some better AE bulk ammo. dont give me that "you cant shoot 5.56 in a 233" because i have shot a tonne of it in my weatherby. my gunsmith even said it would be fine. any ways, the AE shot pretty well about 5 inches at 200 yards. thats pretty good for me because i dont really shoot at longer ranges. But the 5.56 shot amazing!!!!!!!! around 2 inch groups at 200 yards! i couldnt belive it so i shot another 3 shot group and the same. it mesured just under 2 inches. i was amazed. im just woundering how a cheap 5.56 mm round shot way better then a 223 AE???

what?!?! And you barrel didn't explode!?!? Now I don't know WHAT to believe! The interwebs told me that the world would implode upon itself should you put 556 down a 223!!!

I have found when handloading that most of my good loads especially in .223 have come from hot loads, many bordering on max, and even exceding recommended max levels.

It is possible, or likely that the higher pressure 5.56 rounds are following that same pattern.
 
the more powder, the faster the spin out the barrel and so the straighter it goes right?

If the above is right, it would be part of the explanation.
 
funny you should mention shooting 5.56 in a 223....
i was measuring some 223 ammo the other day, so i have some hornady balistic tip 55gr.
they measure 2.248 col
Bulk 5.56 military FMJ 2.256 col
Winchester .223 FMJ 2.217 col
so whats up with that?
the Hornady and the 5.56 are only 8 thou different so almost the same but the Winchester is considerably shorter.
case dimensions are exactly the same so why couldnt i shoot the military rounds out of my savage, hell if the hornadys chamber which they do whats the difference?
can anyone chime in on this and explain?
ok so the 5.56 may be a tad hotter load, so what, are they really that much hotter?

Call Weatherby and ask them if it's safe (it's almost certainly is safe), the problem is really simple:
  • SAAMI 223 Rem chamber has a shorter leade than a 5.56 NATO chamber
  • 5.56 NATO ammo can have a too tight neck for a SAAMI 223 Rem chamber

Almost all 223 Rem rifle don't have a SAAMI 223 Rem chamber but use a modified 223 Rem chamber which can shoot both 223 Rem and 5.56 NATO safely.

In the worst case scenario, you could end up shooting a bullet jammed in the lands with a case neck too tight to allow the release the the bullet.

Lead? you mean the case dimensions are different or the bullet just sticks out farther?
a friend of mine has been shooting 5.56 out of his savage axis and i think i remember him saying that some of them felt like they were more difficult to chamber but none of them blew up his gun.
could they be causing damage to the rifling?
i have a stevens that i just bought and my friend has like thousnds of surplus 5.56 but i dont want to use them if it will screw up my rifle in any way.
