Last week I "scored" full 5 galon pail full of w-w for $25 in the local tire store. Yesterday after 2 hours of separating the trash and different metals and smelting the usable stuff I ended up with only 29lbs of w-w, 12lbs of lead, 2lbs of zink and app 65lbs of steel weights, steel stick ons, clips, paper labels, valves, bolts, nuts, various steel suspension parts, used brake pads and couple of lbs of sand! To visit half a doz stores I spend 1 hour of my time and used at least $5 worth of gas + $25 for the "goods" + propane + 2 hours of work and for what? I don't think the whole effort is worth it anymore. I have 500+lbs of w-w, good for 10yrs or so, the time of easy come easy go w-w just ended.

This why I just buy lead from my local metal reprocessors. No travelling, no begging and they charge me market value for actual product recived and will even mix to my spec assuming a big enough order.
Bought 500 lbs @ 80 cents a pound a couple years ago still have over 300 pounds left

Yup, WW is getting harder to come by. Big tire retail companies like CT, Fountain, Goodyear have contracted out their lead disposal to recycling companies. I tried the transit company and they too have a regular contractor to haul out waste lead.

Recycling companies can still sell lead, minimum of 20 tonnes though:mad: Apparently they are exporting them to China.

Tire stores around my place are visited regularly by other casters. I have missed out on several buckets by a day or two. I am ok with that, really, as long as the lead stays in Canada, and fellow shooters benefit from the supply....but leave some for me guys.:D

Ridiculous how there is so much lead, but none for us casters.

Reminds me of the cartoon with the marooned shipwrecked sailor complaining, "Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink!"

Yes easyrider it's not an easy ride. The recycling companies are getting paid by tire stores for "safe removal of hazardous goods" and then paid again by China. Regular Joe the caster if "lucky" is asked to pay ever increasing price for mostly the steel junk and garbage. Something isn't right here. As for "missing out on several buckets by day or two"; this is their standard answer so you will "feel good" and as potential customer will have their bussines in mind in the future.

I the following works..
Hit only the small independant tire shops, and ask for only "a couple of pounds" of old clip on weights. Give the guy $5 and then return a two weeks later armed with TimHortons coffee all-round, you'll empty the bin!

Reason for the lead: You're a hobbyist and make stained glass windows for fun.

This is what I do but try and find an independent shop that caters to semi-trucks. Most of the big truck tires are still balanced with lead and usually in oz's and not gm's, big suckers the size of your thumb. Stay away from import car dealerships and the chain stores as noted above, they are under contract and will not sell you any.

I have collected nearly 3 tons of WW in the last 10 years and that is more than enough to last myself, my son and future grandchildren. To add to the fact I am building a portable bullet trap to help recycle some of the lead I am shooting. :)

of course they sold the lead to china they need to make your kids some toys.

The one chain store in town sold me WW by the bucket for $40 per bucket. I almost felt violated. I won't say the name but it rhymes with "Pal Tire". He k9inda acted as if he wasn't supposed to, but issued a receipt and all that anyway. Then i hit up the smaller shop in town, bazaam! a free bucket of WW. He just did not want to personally have to move them. I think I know who's getting my business from now on.I think I can trade beer for WW with these guys. Great!

When I lived in Alberta I'd show up with a jug of quality Rye. I could then load all the WW on the premises.
Now I'm in the NWT and it's a new era, lead is now hazardous waste. I show up at the tire shop, they have perhaps 20 full 5 gallon pails of weights. They have no way to get rid of it so it sits. They ask what I want it for. "I make bullets out of it" I reply. This is, after all the north. Not Toronto. I'm more likely to get my butt kicked if I tell them I make stained glass windows. Anyway, I OFFER $20 per FULL 5 gallon pail. They gleefully load 5 of them in my truck for a C note. Each pail weighs probably 140 to 160 pounds. Everyone wins.

I guess I am just lucky. I am able to buy wheel weights from shops nearby for a pretty good price, and I am able to get a fair bit of lead from the pails. Maybe I am fortunate that he guys don't throw anything but weights in the mix. I had a custom mould made with great big ingots and have stock piled a fair bit.

Perhaps things are different in SK.
