I am thinking about getting a 22 win mag

I actually looked at a Remington model 597 today in 22 win mag semi-auto...looks like a decent little riffle to me and the price is reasonable as well, with a Bushnell 3X9X40 scope it was price just under $500 ...

It will take a yote down at 100 yrds with that being said I would not buy it for a dedicated yote set up- to many other better allternatives IMO. 100 yrds would probably be near max range. Someone correct me if I am wrong. If you want it for plinking, gophers, rabbits and occasional coyote then by all means buy one.

It will actually be used as a trap line riffle used to pick up rabbits hopefully foxes and maybe , as you say an occasional coyote.

I thought it would be a good compromise ... more power and range than a 22long riffle and much cheaper to buy and feed than a 22-250

What about the model i am looking at ( Remington 597 semi-auto ) do you consider it a good choice

At a 100 yards a small 10mph wind will drift the bullet around 5.5" and the power isnt that great. I think id get a 223 instead. 223 ammo is pretty cheap about $8 for 20 rounds.

Just my opinion, but I think any rimfire, 22 Magnum included, are too light for coyotes. Will they kill a coyote? Sure. But coyotes are tough, and I think a centerfire is a much better choice to ensure the 'yote goes down quick. I could see a 22 mag being useful on a trapline though.

I have one of the earlier ones built in 97 that had issues with the plastic mags and extracter. I have since switched to the new metal mags and installed a VQ extractor and hammer and have had no more issues. The new ones are reliable from all I've read on them.

I would get a CZ lux 452 in 22 Mag, got one its great, if you want a good cheap rig, can't beat the Model 982VS-CF all black stock, stainless job. Good choice in caliber, yes out to 100 meters, a lung shot on a coyote with 40 gr HP winchester or CCI would be the ticket. :)

I agree the 22 mag isnt a cheap gun to shoot at 10-13 bucks a box of non reloadable rounds
and it isnt that powerful
get a 223 or a hornet could be a good round too
but the 223 is cheaper

My 22 mag is great out to about 125 yds on crows, rabbits and coyotes.I think you're on the right track for what you want it for.Cheap knockdown power for a good price.I mean it only makes sense for longer shots to go to a 223 but you was asking about 100 yds and under.Buy it and you won,t be disappointed. I mean hunting is all about getting close to your prey for an ideal shot not zapping it from a different county.

Not the 22 Mag

I would not choose the 22mag for cayotes. These little critter are tough!
Not that a 22 Mag will not kill a yote at 100 yards. It's just not the best choice. If you want a rimfire? get the .17HMR
From what I have read these are killing yotes up to 150Meters. Never a good idea to be under gunned. 222 or 223 would be my choice.

I picked up a Savage 93F .22 mag this fall for shooting grouse and just in case a coyote comes by. We are allowed to use a rim fire for grouse hunting so the .22 mag made sense to me. This is the first year in 20 that I have got an upland game bird licence, and I loved carring the little .22 mag. It was more exploring my new hunting grounds than actually hunting grouse, but we did get a meal of Ruff Grouse.

22 mag for trapline

Yes, the 22 mag will work great for as listed as a trapline gun since most of your shots will be close as dispatching live animals and the odd longer shot for coyotes. This is what I do use when checking the traps as a ruger 10/22 mag with a foldable stock that was made out of a normal 10/22 foldable stock. This makes a small package when travelling and doing the checks. Could also look at a H&r/nef sigle shot in the youth models in a 22 mag.

My vote for the .223 is the 5th one for it so far.

1. 40 round boxes of .223 at Wal mart..3600 fps and only $17.99
2. A .22 mag with luck on your side, and a very well placed shot will drop a yote, but chances are you will end up looking for them, they won't fall over dead.
3.If the dog is out 200 yards, drop him with the .223

Never liked 22mags much. Better choices available now. Agree w. taffman and others; get a 223 and you won't be undergunned. Or at least a 22Hornet. Reload and you can match your ammo to your needs and save $$.
My 2c worth. :)

Thanks guys,

The deal is done ... I got my 22 mag... Remington 597 ... she shoots like a charm ... managed to get a half inch grouping at about 75 yards in a snow storm with 10 kmh side wind last sunday .

I have followed the provided tips about the guide rods and magazine and fired 50 rounds ... not one jam

Thanks again for all the input
