I am wondering about gas checks.

I'm about to start casting some bullets for 303 British with a Lyman 314299 mould. I've cast for 38 Spl before but this is my first endeavour with rifle bullets. I will be using a Lee lube sizer BUT is there a way to crimp on the gas check without sizing the bullet?

I use the Lyman sizer with an oversized sizer. It barely grazes the bullet but crimps the gas check. With some bullets it may be possible to set the gascheck without sizing the bullet, but that wouldn't apply to the straight through Lee setup.

I have looked online and I haven't seen a tool that crimps on the gas check without sizing the bullet.. One must exist though or maybe it is possible to make such a tool at home. I would like to try some unsized bullets to see how they work in my rifle.

You can buy a gas check seater that will allow you to seat the gas check without any sizing, it works on Lyman and RCBS bullet sizers. Newer Lyman Sizers (mdl. 4500) come with this accessory. I use 4 of these units and have had good luck with all of them, I usually size, lube, and seat gas check all in one operation on these machines however.

So you're saying that if I get the Lyman gas check seater, I can use it by itself, I don't need the rest of the sizing apparatus?

No sir!!!!! You will need a sizer/lubricator to use the Lyman gas check seater!! It is a press so it crimps gas check slightly(due to gas check's design), a few times I have given an opinion on Equip. for cast bullet use on this forum. It ruffles a few feathers when I recommend proper sizing/lubing equip. such as the ones from Lyman, RCBS, SAECO, or the cadillac STAR. Seating gas checks squarely, sizing bullets properly, lubing them properly with the diff. lubes, is important to your final product and cheap fixes are just that!

So the Lyman seater is only in conjunction with a sizing press. Gotcha :D .

I'm still looking for a way to squarely install a gas check on my properly lubed home cast bullets;)

This may sound like a dumb question, but where can I buy gas checks?

I've tried several searches, but have come up short so far.

Sorry for the hijack, but you guys seem knowledgible about this subject.

Higginsons may have some in stock. Wholesale Sports usually carries them but they are still out of stock. I am still waiting for them to send me some gas checks I ordered about 2 months ago. You can also try Russels.

You can use an appropriate diameter Lee sizer to seat gaschecks BEFORE heat treating.
Use a very diluted Lee Liquid Alox lube to avoid leading the die while crimping your gaschecks.
Then wipe the lubricant off the bullets and put them all in the oven on a cookie sheet at about 400 F for an hour and quench them in very cold water.
After that, you can lube them in a greasing press (RCBS Lubamatic or Lyman) with a same diameter lube-sizing die to avoid disturbing the hardened layer.
PP.

Most stores in Canada think that your nose is a gas check......order from Midsouth Shooting Supplies in the US or others, this does (gas checks) add to the cost of reloading.
