I know, there is no free lunch, but I was looking on amazon, and saw a 6-24x50 for the grand sum of $60 Canadian. I looked through the reviews, and found they were generally good, with the bad ones from people who were not able to focus it. so I bought one. On its arrival, I put it on an old swede, which I have yet to try out, although all the reviews said it would hold its zero. It is a 1" tube, and not really bright, but it is clear. It is quite dependent on getting the focus on the objective end set to the right distance, but at 300 yards I can see pine needles. The crosshairs stay in focus. This is a rifle someone made from spare parts and painted black, I bought it for $175 a couple years ago, it is accurate, though not pretty. I loaded up a bunch of Prvi 139 grain bullets, and I look forward to seeing what it will do. I have always been a Bushnell/Simmons/Weaver class of scope guy, so this will fit right in. I hope it works. If this link works it will be a rare success for me. http://s872.photobucket.com/user/22to45/media/IMG_20151123_195258.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

that is an abandoned project...
I will take another shot at getting the rifle in view., Hey, it worked... I got a photo in, you will notice I had to carve a little to get the big end of the scope off the lumber.

$60 you say........hmmmm......years ago, I bought something that was about $60 from Deal Extreme years ago and made the mistake of putting it on my M14:

Anyway, in one range trip, the rifle rattled the internals apart, the turrets came loose and the scope was essentially pooched. I ended up flipping it to an Airsoft guy who just wanted to mount it on a wall hanger.

Maybe that will happen to me. There were comments from guys with 3006 and 45/70. IF it works it works, if not, I won't care...

I bet you'll have no problem with it. A semi's action might cause some jarring related issue as the bolt goes through its hard cycling, but a bolt-action shouldn't be an issue for jarring.

By the way, nice pic, Mr. Donut.

I use a 3-9X40 scope I paid $59.99 for and it's actually excellent glass, has stood up well.

Ok, it's a Bushnell that I bought in the late 70's, but it was under 60 bucks brand new.

It was made in Korea and never thought I would live long enough for that to be a desirable place of origin compared to many of today's mfg locations...

Amazon is a pretty good place to take a risk on stuff like that. Their return policy is pretty frikin' phenomenal.

In the matter of go to scopes, my first scope was a 2.5x bushnell banner, I bought for $36 in 1979. I had a gunsmith mount it on my 93 mauser, and I shot about 10 moose with it, every one in one shot. Yes, they were close, I was young and strong and hunted in the tall brush, the wide field of view was more important than anything, I shot them running, standing, laying down etc. I was a meat hunter. I come from a meat hunting family, and if you could shoot 4" at 100 yards, you could hunt easily. As I aged it seemed that rifles kept coming. I have 300 win mag, that has a 4x Simmons on it. I have shot lots of 1" groups at 200 yards with this rifle. It is bright and clear. I paid $30 on ebay for this scope new, in the early days of Ebay. I am not sold on variable scopes for hunting, although I am for the most part a 300 yard and under hunter.. It is not the length of shot that hampers me, it is the bringing it back. I have redfields, a couple old weavers, a B&L Elite, but for hunting if a fixed power scope will hold its zero and is reasonably bright, it is good enough for me. I want it to be fairly low power and the wide field is handy. This rifle is dedicated to shooting gongs, I want to see how far I can shoot them with the swede. I shoot cheap bullets and use surplus powder that I bought most of 20 years ago. We were hitting a 9" gong every shot at 400 yards with the scope I took off, so I expect it to do pretty well. This penchant for expensive gear that seems to be popular has not found me.

I have even cheaper scopes. The shipping actually cost fifty cents more then both scopes I ordered. One is a 6x40 the other is a 4x32. $12 and $14 each. They work great on my rimfires. Actually very bright and clear. The 4xheld up on my 3.5" mossberg for a couple turkey seasons

The cheap scope is going back, it worked well enough except it would not adjust accurately. I would shoot a 2 shot .3" group, and try to adjust to move where I wanted it, and there was no hope of getting it to the right spot. Sometimes it would move on one plane and not the other, some times it would move 4 times as far as it should, sometimes not at all. I went to the famous scope store, Canadain tire, and a Bushnell Trophy was on sale.. I bought that.

Thats my observation too. I tried probably the same. What I found was a big slack at both ends of the availability moa range. Once you get past the 20 or so moa in the middle, you can turn that turret and you will hear clicks but the reticle does not move. Went back as well.
