A while ago I sold my old Maverick 88. Cheapest lump of gold I ever had and I really missed it. Today I was in Cabellas Nanaimo and laid eyes on a 9 shot Mossberg 500 Persuader. This looks a lot like the Mav 88 but is obviously better quality. The barell is 20" long and the magazine tube comes up flush with it holding 8 shells +1 in the pipe. It has a drilled and tapped receiver for optics or a rail or both, a metal tang safety switch instead of the plastic cross bar safety. Basically a Maverick 88 on steroids. I hope to pick up some ghost ring sights for it. Retail price was $389.99 It came to $436 and some change after taxes. It looks pretty awesome I have to say, maybe I'll post a picture of it in a bit. Anyone have one of these? How do you like it?

Here it is:

Nice shotgun, I have one with the Mesa Tactical 8 shot side saddle on it. I bought it used for $175 and someone had mounted some nice Williams sights on the barrel. They are low enough on the barrel that it still points like a bead, but accurate enough I kept 10 slugs on an IDPA target @ 25, 50 and 100 yards.

On the downside, I had mounted the 12" LOP Hogue Overmold stock on it and got a nice punch in the nose first shot. Live and learn. No thumb wrap, chest more square with the target and the rest of the shots were fine.

Great gun.

But I'm pretty sure they're only 7+1 capacity. (not 8+1)

Really? I managed to fit eight 2 3/4" shells in the tube. The last one is pretty snug but it goes in and feeds. I also had a Stevens 320 that was only 6 in the tube according to everyone and everything but will actually fit 7 in the tube if you make sure the inner "tube cap"(?) is backed out as far as it can go just enough that you're still able to screw the magazine cap on. I haven't fired this gun yet though, just cycled some rounds through it. But I was able to get the base of an eighth shell past the retainer that holds them in the tube.

I have the same one and love it, Mine came Parkerized from factory for some reason.

I have S&J follower, Brownells metal safety, metal trigger guard, Hougue short stock set , and S&J Velcro side saddle.

Never had a single issue, It doesn't pump as smooth as my 1974 mossberg 500 ATP but It holds more...

I keep eyeing this model up as well.. just cant justify it yet..
Its listed a 7+1 with 3"shells. Thats why you can fit extras in with 2 3/4" shells.

Anyone find them to be picky with ammo at all?

If I were to compare this gun to the old Mav 88, I'm pretty sure the barrels are cross compatible magazine tube length permitting (mav88/500), the only ammo I would advise to stay away from (definitely mav88 also this one because of barrel compatibility) is the cheap crap Winchester Universal target loads that Walmart likes to sell. The old Maverick would run any ammo beautifully, even the cheapest Federal target loads from Walmart, but that crap Win Universal will fire-form in a way that causes the base to go crooked catching in the mating grooves causing the gun to get stuck shut and you have to make use of the dual extractors and slam the butt on the ground to get it open. I haven't tried the Winchester Universals in this gun and I don't plan to either.

I've never had an issue with a Mossberg shotgun and I've owned a few. They've fed and fired everything I've ever shoved in the mag tubes. My 20" Maverick wouldn't take an 8th 2 3/4" shell and I tried a few different varieties. They were all about 1/4" past the shell stop. At any rate they're excellent shotguns.

Just tested the gun today. About 50 target loads of the cheap Canadian made Score brand (good stuff) and 15 Remington slugs. Not one malfunction, not one jam. Healthy strong ejection and smooth solid action. Excellent gun. If you have been thinking about one of these, go ahead and buy one.

Note: This gun holds nine 2 3/4 shells fully loaded so it goes through ammo almost twice as fast as a 5 + 1 shot. A heat shield would also be useful as the barrel gets extremely hot if you shoot like I do. I love this gun though I think it's a keeper!

Mossberg 500 Persuader. 20" barrel and mag tube. 8+1 2 3/4. 7+1 3". F**k yeah!

I have her older sister with the bayonet mount on it. Never any issue with her. I assume she should work as well.

Very good choice of model. Looks to have a silver bolt like the Maverick series. I've seen them with black bolts usually. The safety should also be plastic not metal on the persuader.

ShotgunNut….save your $$ on the GRS. Beads are faster and just as accurate. The money saved will get you lots of ammo and practice.
Good choice on the purchase!

Oh I got some practice. Not my first 12 gauge... although my first 12 gauge had ghost rings so I have no trouble using them quickly. This time I opted for a fiber optic bead, works really good.
