I Bought these OLD Antique Grips Are they ivory or antler? (Pics)

I bought these old Antique Grips for my Second Model Russian S&W made around 1878
What do they look like to you antler ivory or bone. i should have em in a week.
There for a Parts gun i bought that was orignaly Nickled the guy found these after i received the almost compleat parts gun. These grips would go nice on a nickled gun.
They have and Ivory look to em but maby someone knows more about these things.

Dingus, they are probabley ivory knowing your luck, If I bought them they would be made out of an old cow horn but you'll probabley end up with narwhale tusk or mastadon teeth!

The fronts look like dried out ivory...Looking at the backside i would say they are not ivory...as far as i know ivory is fairly unifrom in colour...those dark patters look like the center of bone. Im no expert though.

Those look like S&W grips...

I guess i should read a little better...you said that they were for a S&W...Duh.

heat up a small pin and stick it the back of the grip and
smell the smoke. u know plastic smell from bone smell??

LOL well i hope so.

There NOT Plastic the guy i bought them off is avid collector and that was the frist thing i asked.

Plastic would not have the surface cracks. You might try looking at the end of the grips; ivory will probably have more prominent growth rings than bone. The donor gun must have been quite rusty judging from what look like rust stained grips.

My guess would be Bone or Horn. Nice piece of history though, good find

If you use the red hot pin and they are ivory it will smell like burnt hair.

Ah guys i aint burning holes in my 130 year old grips OK

There made from saber tooth tiger fangs tho they could be a mastadon tusk to.

I was just asking going by the look of them.
The seller figgers there Ivory and the backs are stained from gun oil and rust.

Ivory was what these old 1870s canons had custom made instead of walnut.

That was a thought i had as well...i suppose a buch of oil running down the backside could stain them like that...Let us know when you get them. The cracking on the fronts looks like ivory anyways. Looks like some ivory pieces a friend of mine had a while back.
