I was in a gun store today looking at a very, very nice 1911. This was a top-of-the-line gun from an excellent maker. It felt great, just about as nice as a gun can feel - everything worked perfectly, it gave just the right amount of feedback and required just the right amount of pressure to operate. It was the sum of 100 years of development of a single platform. As I handled it though, I realized something - it just didn't do it for me. This is weird because I've owned my share of 1911's and always thought of myself as a 1911 guy. The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that I haven't shot a 1911 in about 10 months - I have one sitting in the safe, it just doesn't make it to the range anymore. In that time I've put 10,000 rounds or thereabouts through my M&P. I know if I tried to put that through a 1911, I'd be doing a pretty fair amount of cleaning and parts swapping. Cleaning, every 500 rounds for the 1911 to ensure reliability, at the most - parts swapping, new springs, potentially new sear, and link. With the M&P I clean it frequently, but I don't HAVE to - I've gone way over 1,000 rounds without cleaning and I've never had an issue. I've also never had to replace a part (I've done it, but not due to a failure, and not because the gun would stop if I didn't). This M&P is closing in on 40,000 rounds, I've never put more than 10,000 through an individual 1911, but I know that if I did, I be looking at some pretty intensive maintenance. So this leaves me somewhat surprised, I never have guessed that I'd end up where I am now - I'm just not a 1911 guy.
