I came to a conclusion today - or, why I didn't buy another 1911

I was in a gun store today looking at a very, very nice 1911. This was a top-of-the-line gun from an excellent maker. It felt great, just about as nice as a gun can feel - everything worked perfectly, it gave just the right amount of feedback and required just the right amount of pressure to operate. It was the sum of 100 years of development of a single platform. As I handled it though, I realized something - it just didn't do it for me. This is weird because I've owned my share of 1911's and always thought of myself as a 1911 guy. The more I thought about it though, the more I realized that I haven't shot a 1911 in about 10 months - I have one sitting in the safe, it just doesn't make it to the range anymore. In that time I've put 10,000 rounds or thereabouts through my M&P. I know if I tried to put that through a 1911, I'd be doing a pretty fair amount of cleaning and parts swapping. Cleaning, every 500 rounds for the 1911 to ensure reliability, at the most - parts swapping, new springs, potentially new sear, and link. With the M&P I clean it frequently, but I don't HAVE to - I've gone way over 1,000 rounds without cleaning and I've never had an issue. I've also never had to replace a part (I've done it, but not due to a failure, and not because the gun would stop if I didn't). This M&P is closing in on 40,000 rounds, I've never put more than 10,000 through an individual 1911, but I know that if I did, I be looking at some pretty intensive maintenance. So this leaves me somewhat surprised, I never have guessed that I'd end up where I am now - I'm just not a 1911 guy.

You should be 'whatever' guy that makes you happy, if its M&P - so be it. Clinging to something just cuz its been a certain way or historic is meh

That being said, I'm still a 1911/2011 guys cuz that what works for me :)

I totally understand this (and I am a 1911 guy). Some days it's just about shooting - not nostalgia, not tinkering and tuning or cleaning - just efficiency, shots on target with no fooling around. For those days I reach for the M&P or P226.

The important thing here is.... It's supposed to be fun. So you gotta go with what works for you. 1911 or not, it really doesn't matter. I'll bet this thread goes off track real fast.;)

Different strokes .... my wife has gone the other way, switching from her poly SR9 to the all-steel 1911. She finds it easier to handle and shoot and loves the way it eats up recoil with 180 and 200 gr major loads.
She'll keep one of her SR9's, but is selling off a second NIB to buy into her first 1911.

I recently looked at a full tray of, on first glance, real nice 1911's at a local shop. Was very, very tempted.

Then staff confirmed they were all "take backs" from a thief. I then passed due to the 'bad mojo' attached to the items.

I love 1911's but also don't mind pounding a few hundred rounds out of my G22 occasionally, too.

That is all.

I can related, op. I tried really hard to like my 1911 but it just didn't happen for me.
I'm a minimalist and I don't have money to spare, so if I don't like it I sell it.
I like the 1 gun concept, and I don't mean 1 of each ;).

I sold off a few of my handguns to cut down and free up some cash, still have a 1911 that is would probably be next on the chopping block. I've owned a couple others before, but 1911 will never be my #1 platform. Cant see myself going to just one gun tho.

Gasp! Sorry to hear that..LOL
Whatever fits best, feels best, and you shoot the best is the gun for you.
I'm a 1911 guy and shoot high round counts, and every little time consuming thing can add up in a hurry!

Whatever floats your scrote:)
I prefer all steel pistols whatever make they might be. Bit of oil to prevent rust and they will last forever. Polymer will degrade get brittle and crack eventually.

A few years ago I decided to make a commitment to one particular gun game in the hope of actually winning something I sold off a bunch of handguns including two 1911's keeping just one -which happened to be a SIG P226. At first I was fine with the decision but periodically I found myself simply missing a 1911 a feeling not helped by watching re-runs of Band of Brothers; the Pacific and all the cool 1911 stuff in Windtalkers etc etc but I was resolute until out of the darkness crept not zombies but the much more compelling reason to own a 1911..... the CanAm deal !!! At first I resisted then I saw a nice 1911 on the EE then I went back to the CanAm deal then..... Well 2000 rounds of .45 and a Norc from CanAm and a Kimber off the EE means I guess I am back in the 1911 game.
