I can't decide . . .

Well I went on a ammo hunt today to see what i could get at my local gun dealer and it turns out that Winchester XP3's (the ammo i planned to use for hunting) are made for .270 and .30-06 but not the .25-06 and the 7mm-08 but has anyone used the ballistic silvertip? because that comes in all four calibers. Also i have to keep in mind that here in Nova Scotia, we have to put in for the moose draw every year and if i were to be drawn i would be using the new rifle for that aswell. So i think that eliminates the .25-06 and 7mm-08. any thoughts?

The .25-06 and 100gr TSX or the 7mm-08 with 140gr TTSX would be FANTASTIC moose guns..........as long as the bullet goes through the lungs/heart ;)

If you're planning on using the gun primarly for deer (maybe the odd moose) at 300 yards or less, then the range restrictions rule out the necessity for something like the .270 or .25-06. If you ever get into reloading, you will find that you don't need to burn all that powder for 300 yard shooting. I'd go with the 7mm-08 for your purposes, and not look back.

My favorite deer rifle is the .25-06, and I use the .280 and 7mm Rem Mag for elk, moose, and bear, but I'm prepared to shoot quite a bit farther than 300 yards. The range requirements are the reason that I deal with the extra powder consumption, recoil, and muzzle blast. If I was limiting myself to 300, I would be using a short-action cartridge like the 7mm-08 or .308.

I have certain loads that I try first in a new rifle, but I certainly would not pick a cartridge based on one load. That load may not even shoot well in your gun,and if it doesn't sell well,it could be discontinued at any time.

7mm-08 is a perfectly fine moose cartridge.

I have several rifles, some with a lot more pop than the 7mm-08 but I still chose to take the 7mm-08 for this years moose hunt.

If ammo is your main concern then there is nothing better than the good old 30-06 and closely followed by the 270win.
