Just FYI for all concerned... I finally received an answer on this issue from MoD MacKay... pretty loosey-goosey on any actual plans to release some of these to the public.
But then, I suppose even a half-assed admission that they might at least CONSIDER allowing us to re-purchase our own property back from them IS a small step forward.
At any rate, here it is:
Dear Mr. Kerr:
Your email concerning the disposal of Canadian Forces Browning Hi-Power pistols was forwarded to me by the Office of the Prime Minister. Thank you for writing.
Our government is aware of the interests that collectors have in this sidearm. The Browning Hi-Power pistol will continue to be used by Canadian Forces members for years to come. When the sidearm is declared surplus, we will ensure that museums throughout the country have access to it, and we are considering other options for disposing of this item, including the possibility of providing collectors with an opportunity to purchase a select number of Browning Hi-Power pistols.
I trust this information is helpful, and thank you again for writing.
Sincerely,
Peter MacKay
Minister of National Defence

Dear Mr. Harper,
I am writing to you today as my Prime Minister, and as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
In Saturday's " Ottawa Sun" I see the CF are set to upgrade their issue
sidearm, and retire their venerable Canadian-made Inglis pistols.
The galling thing about this article is that these old pistols are to be smelted down, instead of being sold to law-abiding Canadians.
These pistols are, in fact, a distilled essence of Canadian military history, and to destroy them would be a slap in the face to every Canadian citizen here, and an insult to the veterans who carried them through every conflict this country has been involved in for the last 70 years.
Make no mistake... these pistols are totally legal to own, with modern versions being sold in this country to this very day! They cannot in any way, shape or form, be considered an "Assault" type of weapon. They are semiautomatic pistols, pointe finale, and would be perfectly legal for ANY Canadian to own, if he or she so desire.
Sir, these heirlooms could be sold to the public and the proceeds turned back into the CRF, thus helping with the deficit. And no, I am not being facetious...every bit counts, doesn't it?
The main point of this communiqué, however, is this wanton and totally unjustified destruction of Canadian history without any regard for the rights and opinions of your voting public.
I suggest that you do the right thing, Sir, and set in motion an Order in Council to allow the eventual sale of this surplus material to the Canadian public.
My father carried one during the Second World War. I carried one as an Infantry Officer some 20 years ago.
What in God's name has changed in this country since then. It is disgraceful.
Regards,
Dave Kerr
