Investigators are tracing the origins of four rifles seized by Winnipeg police on Monday to find out if any have been discharged in previous crimes or reported stolen.
So far, police have confirmed at least one of the rifles was stolen from a legal owner during a break and enter in southern Manitoba, said police spokesman Const. Robert Carver.
SAWED DOWN
Officers found the firearms when they stopped a vehicle near McGregor Street and McAdam Avenue in West Kildonan and saw one of them sticking out of a duffel bag in the backseat, Carver said.
Carver was unaware of the reason for the traffic stop.
One of the rifles, a .22-calibre model, was sawed down to make it easier to conceal.
"We're seizing a number of .22-calibre weapons and that's because it's probably one of the most common firearms in the country," Carver said.
The others are two older-model rifles and a type of muzzleloader thought of as an antique, Carver said.
"They're older-looking weapons," he said.
Carver said the muzzle-loader was stolen during the break-in.
The bust was carried out by the street crime and District 3 and 4 community support units at 10 p.m., Carver said.
Police arrested two male occupants of the car. It doesn't appear the suspects have any gang ties or significant involvement with police in the past, Carver said.
SEVERAL CHARGES
John Alcudia, 19, and Ksamil Kalturnyk, 24, both of Winnipeg, are charged with several weapon-related charges, police said. Both are in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
Illegal firearms have been under the microscope in Winnipeg this summer due to a number of shootings, including one which killed an innocent victim at a wedding reception on the weekend.
Since June 1, there have been at least 15 incidents where gunshots have been fired at homes or people, wounding seven and killing two.
"We're seeing a lot of guns in the city," Carver said. "Certainly, last weekend has brought on some tragic events in relation to guns in the city."
