But when I do, I can't make up my mind of which rifle to take... :(

Last year I had my CZ-858, Enfield, Remington 700 and an SKS. I like variety, and I have several spots where each can come in handy (scoped 700 for the long shot I did take, Enfield for the thick bush walk, and the SKS and CZ for my tree stand with a clear LoS up to 70m). I also bring extras cause a few people I have hunted with in the past (friends of friends etc) always f**k something up, from broke their gun, forgot ammo, forgot their key to the trigger lock (actually happened!). So I like to have one "extra" in case. Just some of the guns at the camp last year.

It's not to much extra gear really, as the camp I go to is about 1km away from my childhood home with a well used road to and from and so its easy get stuff back and forth. So this year I wanted to spice things up a bit as my Uncle is finally coming back to hunt with us after 12 years or so, and he likes the older guns and I like scaring him with the new stuff. So this years theme is military short to tall! The list as is follows, T-97nsr, CZ-858, Enfield, Mosin Sniper. We have 4 antlered tags plus one doe tag, so we should be coming home with meat. Now I just can't wait for Saturday to come! :D

Does anyone else take several rifles on their hunts? If so what do you have out this year?

I like to have a few rifles with me when I go out far from home. most of the time I hunt around home though. this year I will be using my ruger m77 all weather in 338 win mag, my zastava with iron sights in 308 win. I would like to use my weatherby vanguard in 223 but sadly sask founds upon using anything smaller then .23 cal on deer.

Well apperntly based on what the guy at th gun store said about a .300 win mag being the best calibre for deer they must be getting tougher sso you should probably pack that LAW along with you.

Well you better take this pic into your gunstore. 120-130ish yard shot, through the heart out the other side and through the leg, with 55g .223.

.223 is not a deer round... I remember last year and you made a great shot no doubt... Realistically, you need your main watch rifle, your brush rifle and a general backup rifle... Personally, I'd leave the sks behind... My main is a 30-06 with 3-9 x 50... My brush is a 270 with open sights and my backup is .308 with 1.5 - 4 x 40 that can sub for either....

I had my 1905 Swedish Mauser , my 1943 Mosin-Nagant, and my 1950 SKS along to hunt deer with. As it turned out, my son filled both of our buck tags with his Savage Edge in .270 . Hopefully, I can return the "favour " next year ! Milsurps and Red Rifles rule !

Out of your guns, I'd carry the CZ858. Decent caliber for deer and more than capable at the ranges you'll be shooting. I would consider purchasing a decent scope 270 bolt gun in the future though.....

I'm sorry 870, I can't see myself doing that... I really only am drawn to military calibers and styles of rifle. Maybe a .308 Remington 700 though.

And Blackwater, he was :D !!

What is this nonsense about carrying multiple guns into the bush for a hunt?
This is a hunting not WWIII. I would suggest picking one rifle and becoming proficient with it.
I have been hunting for a long while and have never needed a "backup rifle"

Interesting thought, though I only carry one gun at a time. I just find it more enjoyable to have the option of choosing something different from day to day. If you have never needed a backup rifle then congrats. I have seen people drop their moose gun from stands, quads, loose their grip while trudging through the woods. Those peoples hunts were over then and there as their other gun was a 22hour drive away.

Also, I am proficient with all of the firearms I posses and I know what they are capable of and what I am capable of. In the past some of my extra backup guns have been used by my friends and family as tey ran into such an occasion. If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.

Just a different approach, he's not busting into the woods blazing with dual wielded hunting rifles here. He's simply bringing backups because he can afford to, and the convevience offered. You could go an entire life with a single gun and never run into issues, but its not only about running into issues, its also about having the luxury of choice.

And I hope you never do. But the fact of the matter is that you can fall on your rifle and bust a scope (seen it happen), accidentally stuff the barrel into the mud and not be able to satisfactorily clean it out or have any number of other freak mishaps occur (though forgetting the trigger lock key doesn't scare me as I don't trigger lock NR firearms). I always take two rifles with me when I head out, even if it's just for a day trip (which most of my trips are). Rifles can go down and you need to be prepared in case they do. It's like a spare tire for your car.

I always take a back up. My spot is a 10 hour drive.

A little far to run home if I have a malfunction.

My primary rifle is a savage 116 7mm mag and my back up is my beloved 1954 Remington 760 in 270.
