So I ended up with an East German marked M38 Mosin. I didn't even realize until I just listed it for a trade. Now I don't know what to do. I don't really collect milsurps. I just like to use them.

Talk to our Ukrainian CGN member "Ratnik". I'm pretty sure the consensus is that the triangle with a number symbol in it no longer means it was used in East German service...

Lots of discussion about it on the gunboards Forums...

No one is exactly sure what it is (refurb mark of some sort?)...

I know the East Germans usually used a "Sunburst" type marking for anything issued to the Volkspolizei/Border Guards/Secret Police. Like what you would find on a Vopo G43.

Take care.

Didn't P&S sell a bunch of eastgerman M44's with the same mark not to long ago? I could be mistaken but I don't think I am, and who am I to question such a reputable company. If I offended anybody, I'm sorry.

The Ossies used the M44 and the 91/30 Snipers for sure... not sure about M38s...

I really personally don't know what the "real truth" is behind the "Triangle Number" markings anymore... I do know that I am holding off on paying a premium on rifles with that marking though.... :(

From a Gunboards Poster:
No one really knows much at all about the /1\ marking. It has been understood to be a DDR refurbishment mark, possibly associated with the old Haenel factory in Suhl in Thüringen. The pendulum has now swung more in the direction of doubting the veracity of the /1\=DDR claim.

Yes, they did. I picked up one as well. Accurate as all hell for a short carbine. However, there are not a lot of distinguishing marks on the EG M44 that differ from a typical Russian M44.

What is very interesting is that comparing my newly found (yesterday) M38 to my East German M44, the marks are identical. That said, the EG M44 is noticeably machined better than the more rough machined M38, not withstanding the actual condition of the 2 rifles. The rifle from P&S is in immaculate condition and a very nice find.

I find the markings to be interesting and maybe someone can shed more light on this. I'm still pleased with the recent M38 find as I can leave my museum pieces in the safe and have a shooter for sh*ts n giggles.

Hard to say for sure, but the date appears to be 1943. Might be issued to East Germany, but not manufactured by the Master Race.;)

Grizz

That's pretty cool. Never know what you're gonna find when you pick up any of these Mosin variants. Would be a keeper and a shooter for me no doubt.

BUMP

I'm still waiting for someone with a big brain to enlighten us with the possibility and/or circumstances that the M38 has East German markings?

I'm skeptical that it is a DDR marking but that is all I have. Has anyone ever seen a "2" or a "3" in a triangle that are supposed to go along with the story about the "1"? It is certainly a fact that the DDR used M44's.
