After going through many an Enfield, I have finally found MY gun - it is a 1943 Longbranch No4 MkI* beauty to behold and fits so nicely...I wont elaborate how I came to be in possesion of such treasure... just that it sat in a closet along with a 1917 C-broad arrow marked no1 MkIII - unfired for almost 60 years - yes - UNFIRED in that time... why? It was missing the rear sight and ejector screw ...also the MkIII was missing its bolt - both guns had be oiled before being put away, and thank God they just rested - a few dings on the wood as things were piled on top, and some discoloration on the butt stocks from direct sunshine at some point, but no moisture! The weather must have played nicely since there are no cracks from drying of the stocks... and the metal retains 99% of the lustre. The bore however is another story - it looks factory new - I have NEVER seen a shiny bore on an enfield - clean 2 groove cut and slugged at .311 - super tight!!!
I have put a proper-period bold on the MkIII and after checking the head space, took her out shooting last week - 6 inch groups with milsurp ammo - shooting to the right about 8 inches... but she shoots!
Now, my Enfield enthusiasts...I need to find the proper rear sight for the 1943 Longbranch No4MkI* - I have put a temporary sight from a No5 on for now, but I did find a proper LB ejector screw in my pile of guts. My question is what would be the correct sight? a set flip up 300/600 Mk II or an LB mk III sight?
Cheers
