A little back story.

I joined an outdoor club this year so I could shoot my Savage 10BA out to 200 yards.
To shoot longer distances I would need to drive quite a ways.
I've met a lot of new people at this club and most of them are really nice and helpful to new shooters.
I few months ago there was an older retired gentleman shooting next to me who felt he needed to give me advice on my gear, reloading, and my shooting.

His pointers on shooting were helpful but his condecending attitude to my equipment was a little annoying especially the way he said things when others were around.
In one instance another guy next to me gave me 40 pieces of brass from 2 boxes of Federal Gold Match. The older guy turns to me and says "stop being so cheap and go buy yourself a box of Lapua brass.

He has made other comments at other times on how the Savage can never compare to his Sako TRG-22, which is true being over twice the price.

Yesterday I was there with a friend and had just finished shooting the group of my life when he arrived at the 200 Yard range.
He asked me if I decided to trade in my rifle yet for a Sako.
I showed him my target and told him I think i'll keep it and left.

PS. I did take his advice and purchases Lapua brass. I thanked him for that.

Tell him next time you see him, that you have learned your lesson about cheap Sako's and you are going full custom on your next purchase.

Nice shooting. What range are you going to?
I had similar experience with people who like to give their opinion a bit too much. After a while just whip out an sks, let off a couple fast shots and they leave you alone....

Great shooting! while the old guy may have some good advice the condecending overtones are not needed. If you asked for his advice on the TRG, he could have put it in a way where he wasn't hacking on your gear.

Just keep up the great shooting.

Excellent shooting and there is absolutely nothing wrong with shooting a Savage rifle.

How much difference did the Lapua brass make ?? I know Savage are about the most accurate rifle you can get for the money , well other than Tikka lol.. Wow those are some good groups for 200 , hell some of them i would be good 100 yard group! i was thinking of buying some Lapua or Norma brass , but is it worth it for the amount of accuracy gain ? Those Scandinavians really do make some good stuff ..

There are a few old silhouette shooting Elmer Fudd d bags at my range that are such dicks to young new shooters (especially with black and red rifles) they get turned off the sport and never come back to the range .. these a**holes go beyond thinking they own the place or something , most of them are regular members, some of them have some sort of cheesy title there ..

I can see being a #### when safety is a concern but otherwise they should be trying to make it a good experience for new shooters to further the sport and our pro gun political numbers.

You missed a perfect opportunity.

You get him to demonstrate how he shoots (pick the position or range), and comment to him that you notice he scrunches up his shoulder at the last stages before he squeezes of the shot, and ask "does it help?".

See if he can hold a group the next round. :) A variation of an old golfers trick.Ya need to be able to keep a straight face though.

Cheers
Trev

Young jerks have a way of growing up to be old jerks.

On the other hand, like a lot of older people, he may just be lonely and the range could be one of his few opportunities to interact with people. He just doesn't know how to start a conversation except in that sort of critical/bantering way. Maybe just take it with a smile and good humour the first few times and see what develops. I've heard being old can make you a bit cranky at times.

Us...we'll find out later...hopefully.;)

Yep, just ignore the negativity, and reinforce the positives.
Old bird may not mean harm, but is socially challenged.
If your equipment works the way you want it to, that is what matters!!
Looks like your Savage is doing just fine.
Eagleye.

I LOVE out shooting mouthy people with really expensive kit, with my beat up old remington. TRGs are nice but they are far from the be all end all. Besides its the shooter not the piece at most levels.

This reminds me of the young promising shooter who is asked by a foreign coach "How long have you had the problem with your position?"
Shooter's answer "Since I started winning!"

Keep shooting. Do everything in your power to make each shot. Dismiss or avoid the negative. Avoid the tendency for rebuttal - put all the energy into executing the shot. You will leave the competition in your wake. It's amazing how you can disarm your competition with merely a polite smile.

It's hard for me to compare since all my brass except for the Lapua has been range pickup.
If I had some new brass from another manufacturer I could probably make a fair comparisson.

Where you do see the superiority of Lapua brass is that all of the flash holes are dead center and perfectly round.
Also all 100 cases weighed within 1.1 grains from lightest to heaviest.
I had no dented necks as some others have reported in the past.

I had a similar experience with a fellow with his cz with a comment of nice little marlin you have there
He was joking around however when he asked to have a little accuracy fun
i did enjoy putting a round right in between two of his he was trying to group
He did say nice shot though so guess anyone can learn that the rifle is only half the equation and price isnt the only factor in accuracy.
