I got bit by the precision bug! Looking for some guidance.

Oh wow, I didn't realize a good scope is $500+. Do I really need to spend this?

General rule - the scope should cost more then the rifle! Get into the high end stuff (Schmidt and bender) your going to payin over 3000... But worth every penny

I'm another vote for a good .22 if your literally just starting out, great practice and learning tools! My .22 with bushnell 5-15 scope comes in at around 800 and sees more use then ANY of my high cost rifles

I am another newbie to the shooting sports, my safety course is coming up on sunday. While I am enthusiastic, my budget is small and the options in my price range are limited.

What about .17 instead of a 22? as I understand it the higher velocity makes it possible to shoot out much further than the 22lr without the issues associated with dropping into subsonic speeds. Ammunition costs are higher but still would be much less than .223

Good match 22lr ammo is much much better then .17 hmr ammo and have sub-sonic muzzle velocities.
OP, if you're a tinkerer go with a stevens in .223. You can put money (DIY barrel, drop in stock, trigger ect) into it as your budget allows and you can do all the work yourself. As everybody else has mentioned, you might want to start off with a bigger budget, do not cheap out on optics as you will eventually realize that you want to upgrade.

I'll tell you the straight goods.. if you want to get a nice rifle without spending an arm and a leg, AND most importantly a rifle/action that can be upgraded and has a big aftermarket community. Get a Remington 700 , this is what a good portion of accurate bolt rifles are based on, even custom ones, etc. with your Remington 700 get a decent glass, I would recommend SWFA SS, it's like a Leupold MKIV at a fraction of the price.
If you want your Remington to look cooler, get an AICS chassy system for around 1k for it.

If you have the money, just get a TRG22 by Sako or an Accuracy International AX or AW system :)

Also remember , everybody has to start somewhere and very few buy a $3000.00 scope and $3500.00 custom rifle right off the start, just because guys have expensive rigs right now they figure everyone should have to spend that.

There is some good advice on here for starting out, take your time and shop around and you'll get a 600m gong ringer in your budget.

noneck showed ya a couple of very viable options, they shouldn't be over looked.

That's what I did. Ordered up a 700P with some Nightforce glass. The glass I'll be able to keep forever. When I get skilled enough that the 700P holds me back I can get it accurized and a good barrel spun on and put it in whatever stock/chassis happens to float my boat. The closest range to me also has a max of 250 yards which factored into the equation as well.

It should be here any day now from the folks at ATRS. I also picked up a 22lr as a training rifle (Savage Mark II TR.) Even the glass on that is $350 used, $50 base... $100 rings... it adds up!

I LOVE the 22. Total riot to shoot that all day long for only a few bucks.
