I got my moose too.

saturday everning at about 7 o'clock I heard it coming into the call. then it hung up for about 15-20 min. with the season ending at something like 7:48 I was wondering if i should go after him. figured I'd call again and see what happens. almost as soon as the call started i could hear him splashing through the beaver pond. he came around a small point and stopped to trash a small bush. I managed to muster enough self control to wait until he steped clear of the bush before firing. three quick shots and he was down.
He was a 13 point bull. when I registered it they gave an estimated dressed weight of 764 pounds. droped the four skinned out quarters off at the butcher and they had a combined weight of 596 pounds.

No, thats a niece who for what ever reason seemed to get a good laugh out of poking the moose in the nose with a stick.

What were you shooting, btw?

I was shooting a Rem 700 in .308 loaded with 180gr. winchester silvertips. I learned a bit about moose anatomy while skinning the moose. I pulled the shot a bit and the bullet struck its chest between the front legs. i was suprised to find after skinning that it never penetrated the chest cavity but traveled around between the ribs and the shoulder coming to rest against the hide about eight inches behind the off side shoulder. I didn't realize just how much the front of the ribcage tapers in. after the shot it ran in a circle and I fired again striking it in the high in the hip. then it stopped broad side and the third shot went through both lungs and exited the far side. at the time I was sure my first shot would have been fatal, but after skinning I was glad I chose to follow the advice of my uncle and keep shooting until it quits moving.
