Im not much for syn stocks but im lookin for a cheap rifle. The two i got in mind are the stevens model 200 from SIR in 30-06 or the mossburg atr in 30-06 from SIR. The only + side to the mossburg is that it comes with factory installed Weaver style bases. Whats the quality diffrence?

i would recomend you save a bit and grab a 700p you will not regret it man either that or a savage

ignore his advice

why would you get a 700p ??????? I think he means SPS and even then, what, 50 more bucks and you are at a tikka?

the steven 200 is a great rifle. Its made by savage... has a cheap stock on it though.

its a very popular rifle and alot of people buy them and later upgrade them.

I ended up with a 111FCNS (savage) in 270 but I later upgraded to a tikka..

Savage makes some fine rifles.

Hardly an upgrade...Tikka uses the leftover plastic from the stock making process of the Stevens 200 and makes $100+ magazines, bolt shrouds, and trigger guards with it:puke:

Buy a Stevens 200, and if you can come up with the extra money, pick up a Remington 700 or a Ruger 77.

Generally, the Mossberg 100ATR would probably not be a bad choice, and the Stevens 200 would probably be a bit better. But it could depend on which fits you better. Having a rifle that happens to fit you well can make a big difference in whether you are able to realise its full potential. Try to get your hands on one of each in local gunshops, or better yet, on a range if you know anyone who will let you take a couple of shots with theirs.

[You could buy the stevens 200, then when you want to upgrade, sell it in the EE for more than you paid, thats what everyone else does./QUOTE]

I thought that was only the remington 710:D :D

Post a add in the EE first, see what comes up in the first week then go from there. You are still going to have to buy a scope and all of the other accessories and you may just get a good package at a fair price from a fellow member.:D

You could hunt your whole life with the Stevens, or the Mossburg or a Remington SPS or or or.

A gun is good for a long time, the scope however is a much bigger thing to worry about. A cheap Tasco or Simmens (what comes on the Savage "package deals") will pretty much crap out and it don't matter what rifle it is bolted to.

Don't worry about the gun so much as the scope.

Good "cheep" scopes are the Leupold Rifleman or VX1 and Bushnell 3200.

Crappy scopes, Tasco, Simmens, and most cheaper Bushnels.
