Shoot, wrong forum! please move to hunting and sporting arms
I picked up a 50 cal muzzle loader 3 weeks ago, only because it was $75 for a very pretty safari arms piece. One shot (and 5 more for good luck) and I was hooked. The .223 and 7.62x54r just don't cut it any more, I'm looking for something 44-45 cal
I have a 44 magnum revolver and I lean for the 44 for convenience but i would like to shoot over 400 grains (just because) which the 44 case won't like, so maybe the 450marlin or a 45-70 would be better.
I will likely never hunt with this and if i do id get proper bullets- slow speed cowboy loads are fine for me; would the 20:1 twist rate of the browninb blr handle 400 to 450 grain slugs at just 1000fps, or should I look for a 1:14 twist in 45-70?
Found it on the internet so I don't know how accurate this statement is;
The US Army settled on a 22" twist for the original 1873 405 gr bullet and found it just adequate for the rather blunt 500 gr bullet of 1881.
Most current production .45-70s have an 18" twist which is good for bullets at least up to 540 gr at black powder velocities (1200 fps or so.)
As far as subsonic goes, the .458 SOCOM is available with an 18" twist stated to be adequate for up to 450 gr bullets and a 14" twist for bullets 500 gr and more. Discussion at: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_121/463281_.html
The .458 Win Mag has a 14" twist for the purpose of stabilizing a steel jacketed 510 gr through an elephant's head.
I know of no factory fast twist .45-70.
