This is why I clean my 1911 less than my GLOCK 17!

I can dis-assemble my 2000 era NP-29, no problem.

It is during re-assembly that getting the slide release to go through the frame all the way that drives me crazy!

I can field strip, clean and re-assemble my G17 in 5 minutes.

I HATE 1911s.

Turn the gun over when you're putting the slide on, it'll keep the link in the right place. I'm not going to pretend it's like taking down a P226, but it's really not that hard.

Lots of good videos on disassembly/assembly of the 1911 on the net.

If you're worried about causing the "idiot scratch", make a plastic" idiot scratch prevention tool".

Pattern on the net.

I can field strip and clean a 1911 in 5 mins, slide stops are easy. I tilt mine on it's side.

If you think a 1911 is hard. Try a Ruger MK 3 series. Even worst with a mag disconector still functional.

I’ve only cleaned my mk3 once. I’ll never do that again.

Yes dealing with the bushing and the slide stop can be a PITA, particularly with a tight fitting gun like a Les Baer. To avoid the idiot scratch, best trick I found is to flip the gun over and use a small plastic scribe to depress the ball detent. The stop pops right in without the force and jiggling that inevitably results in the scratch. Hard to beat the Sig P22X for ease of take down.

I must be of the minority on this one. I can easily and prefer to completely strip down any of my 1911s over some of the Glocks or M&Ps I've had. Probably my time at Para-Ord and a few thousand builds has something to do with that..

My commander .45 is literally my easiest gun to clean. I dont even need any tools to disassemble or put back together. My bushing pops off with my fingers and elbow grease. The slide release just requires a stiff knuckle to push out. I must have gotten lucky I guess...

Maybe a bit of chamfering and de-tuning of any sharp edges involved will ease your pain.... A bit of lube often helps with penetration difficulties as well.... :)

A micro straight screw driver with some electrical or scotch tape over the tip works well for clearing the slide stop in or out.
