like it says i have a chance at buying an m1 garand, i don't know anything about it yet except that it comes with 50 clips, and its got some kind of different sights on it and maybe a different barrel? i don't know if the sights and barrel are stock or aftermarket, the seller didn't say. he wants 1000$ firm, with 50 clips and some ammo, but the ammo was rolled by somebody else so im not interested in it.
so from this small bit, what do you guys think. i know theres no pics yet and no solid info on it but just from this, what do you think. from what i hear there hard to come by nowadays. does anybody know if there was ever a training model with different sights and barrel on it. and if there after market is it possible to find originals and replace them?

thanks in advance nate.

Dunno without pictures and info, could be a steal... or it could be way over priced, just dont let him tell you it was the rifle that killed Hitler....

hahaha. ya the rifle that killed Hitler, that's funny hehehe. ya i wasn't expecting much from anybody, i know how hard it is without pics and more info, but i figured I'd try anyways

A good serviceable Garand is a good thing to have. Personally I'd balk at paying that much, because I'm cheap, but from what I've seen, a nice one can certainly fetch that much in today's market. So if you want to play there, you'll probably have to pay there.

well if its nice im willing to pay. ive always wanted a garand, an original ww2 era 1911, and an enfield. im not huge into the old service firearms but that was a huge time in the world and i think it would be nice to have at least a few guns from that time that our guys and allies used. i almost had a 1911 made in the middle of 1944 but the gunsmith had his fingers on it already. it even had original grips and owners manual. i was a bit pissed when he said it wasn't for sale :(

Nate, you really are a babe in the woods. Before you take the plunge, find out what it is. The rifle may well be a poorly converted job to 7.62x51 and on the other hand, it may be a very well done conversion. Is the stock after market? Synthetic or oringinal and in nice condition with cartouches present or beat all to hell and sanded down. The enblocs are worth $2 each in that quantity. Is there a bayonet and sling with it and are they correct?

There will be other Garands around, at that price, lots of them. Just post a WTB on the equipment exchange and prepare yourself for a deluge of offers.

Time to pull back and think this through a bit more.

If it's a 7.62x51 conversion, make sure it feeds and ejects reliabley. If they're not done right, they are a pain in the butt to fix and expensive, if you can't do it yourself. If this seller is so fixed on a price, make him prove it works.

Now, I will caution you. A semi automatic rifle is different from a bolt action and takes some knowledge to keep it functioning. If the only thing you've fired in semi auto is a 10-22 Ruger, you will need an attitude change and some simple but basic instruction on care and feeding of the beast. It will be expensive to feed. It will need to to be dismantled and cleaned on a regular basis etc.

Personally I've never liked the Garand, far too heavy and in my opinion the '06 cartridge is a little much. I think the Russians had it right with the SVT-40 and had the Americans kept the Garand in it's original cartridging, it would have been perfect. Just my 2 cents, but is sounds like a good deal so jump on it.

If the rifle has been altered, find out exactly what has been done before buying.

An M-1 is about a pound heavier than a SVT; muzzle velocities, with similar bullet weights, are similar.

I'd get more info ont he make etc before I would hand out that kind of cash.

Garands are out there. Just look where they are at and you'll find them ;)

For a Garand that I haven't seen I probably wouldn't pay much more than $400. Nice ones on the EE have gone for a lot less than $1000. Just keep your eyes open. There was one a couple of weeks ago that went for $600.

No pictures, no parts summary, no sale. Just a good opportunity to get hosed.

For that kind of cash crisp bore, 90% blue and nice furniture. Don't turn your nose up @ the home rolled ammo. If it comes with the rifle wallow in the extra enbloc clips, pull the bullets and re-measure the powder.

Agreed a decent (shooter) M1 can be had for around $600. For $1000 it better be all matching original condition in perfect shape . & the enbloc clips are worth $1.50 to $2.00 max . In spite of the latest EE ad trying to sell them for $15.00 each. LOL

well i cant pull the bullets because i dont know how to reload yet. i forgot to mention that the sale will be face to face and the rifle will be looked over and lots of questions will be asked before i buy it. ill look it over get all my questions answered then post up here again and see what you fellers have to say.

thanks a bunch for all the info guys.

Decent Garands go for around $800 in the EE every week. For me to pay $1000 for one would require it to be in very good condition with an excellent bore and wood. For all the guys saying that you can find a good shooter for $400, let me know where that is and I will buy them by the crate at that price. The one that listed for $600 in the EE was the only one I saw for less than $750 in probably 5-6 months.

Have you checked with P&S Militaria? unless their website is out of date, they have 2 International Harvester M1's for $500 each. You might want to give Jean a call. Best regards Tony

EDIT: forget about them, they both have bulged barrels, unless you can get a cheap replacement barrel somewhere in Canada put up a wtb in the EE forums. ;)

svt1940, please lead me to the very good Garands starting at $400, if you can verify your statement, especially on several, it sounds like a fine investment opportunity to me. Any good + Garand out there right now, will get $600.

nate18, do a search for the M1-D Garand, also look up Breda barrels. This is good info to know when you go to see it.

I've seen more than a couple available locally for $400-600. Not online sales. I have yet to be the first one in line. They are usually gone within the day and I hear about them a couple of days late. I sure wouldn't mind one though.

You mention something about sights and barrel.
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that is is a Danish rebuild with new barrel and rear sight assembly. Look for a Danish crown on the right side of the barrel, just underneath where the cocking handle is. You need to pull back on the handle to see it.
Also, the dial on the rear sight has been changed.
They are great shooters, but not worth $1000
