We need a cool semi auto chambered in 7.62x54r
We cant have dragunov rifle and there is really nothing on the market
Here except for the svt 40.

So i am going to start designing one now and start building this winter hopefully.
I dont really want to work in my industry anymore, I just want to build guns.

Would love to hear everyones ideas

I used to think SVD is the only way to go but I could be wrong. Not sure if you need some kind of permit to make guns.
I commend you on this new design.

Yes. Although you dont need any permit to modify guns. Its going
To be quite the expensive project so I will look into to absolutely everything before I invest.

Its an idea that I have persure, Not just A 7.62x54r (new rifle) build but firearms in general
Its something I want to do and want to suceed I assure you I will research all legalities for this.

Looking into to gunsmithing courses and machining, but ill tell you I have lots to learn, well honestly tons to learn.
But im a quality guy and failure is not really an option for me with this.

Procrastination is a horrible thing with these ideas, I really dont want to be that guy.
I want to make a living with this. Its my entertainment but also for my profit,I have to make this happen.
I spent 6 months designing a bolt. Im slow but Its a great design.

I need time to think and tinker, which is a hardest thing to get a hold of.I have alot of projects in the way but
This is my dream I need to grasp it. Life really gets in the way.

I wish you success, and remember, when you're test firing, a vice and some string are your friend

Hahaha yes I will take this advise to the bench. I really have to spend less time on this fourm
To get this done but at the same time I am a firm beleiver in using everyone's mind to get a project done right.

I take everyone's opinion in and exit out good from bad

You have my support. I love 7.62x54r and love shooting my SVT-40. However, variety is the spice of life or so they say and another rifle in that cartridge that we Canucks can own would be interesting.

Good luck on your endeavor, to quote a friend that used to be in the business down in Texas " To make a million dollar in the gun business, you have to start with two million dollars"

When Soviet designers were competing for new semi-auto for Red Army in 1930x they were not happy with army's requirement to have it in 7.62x54R. Outdated, overpowered and rimmed. But they had to suck it up. You don't. But I assume cartridge selection makes your project "red", then it's the only choice.

Good luck on the dream!

I'm thinking if you make it a straight blow back design, the breech block will only have to weight 12 to 15 pounds? ;)

J/K... that rounds seems to have similar energy to the .308, so perhaps start with one of those, make it a longer recoil and mate it to a mosin barrel?

How about replacing the problematic wooden stock of the SVT with a stamped/ welded steel (or machined aluminum) construction onto which are bolted wood handguard, pistol grip, buttstock, etc. Could be made to look quite a bit like a Dragunov but could also be a real functional improvement. If it was a drop-in replacement for the wood you might even sell a few of them.

A guy i know has managed to adapt an SKS stock onto an SVT with some clever work and a lot of epoxy bedding. He found that accuracy improved greatly after getting better stock contact with the receiver. also if the barrel harmonics are tuned with high temp O-rings similar to how the Russians used to bed the barrel in mosins, or how some precision gun stocks give you a tension screw to put pressure on parts of the barrel.

Also, the reciever itself flexes an awful lot. A metal stock that cradles the receiver would do a lot. He found that adding the corwin arms scope mount for the SVT actually re-inforced the reciever enough to reduce a significant amount of receiver flex.

The main problem in getting accuracy out of the SVT platform was the contact with the stock (since the trigger group simply snaps into the stock and isnt really bolted in there very good).

If you can create a replacement metal stock that hits all those points, you can create almost a whole new gun without the risk of accidentally blowing yourself up making an actual new gun... plus the canadian market would love you.

Good luck and I hope it works out for you. If I had skills, capital, and time to build a gun I know what I would do. I would build a rifle similar in idea to the Troy PAR but it would use a proprietary mag unique to my rifle. Then it could run 30rd mags and consequently I would dominate the Canadian black rifle market. Come on lotto 649, daddy's got to start a factory.
