I have a stainless Rem 700 in 30-06 on its way as a donor and I have a laminated stock but I don't know what to build with it. My first thought was to rebore it to 9.3x62 and shorten the barrel and it could fit in between my guide gun in 45-70 and my Sako 75 in 375 Wby. Any ideas, I can't see going under 35 cal and I could get a magnum bolt if needed. Ex 375 Taylor.
 
The 9.3 is my favourite option, cool cartridge, very little mods to the rifle. And if someone can do the rebore the easiest and most economical.
 
9.3X62 with a 21" barrel and add express sights and a barrel band stud. Then mount a VX-3 1.5-5X20 in low QD rings... practice with and without the scope... when you get comfortable with it, sell every other gun you own, except a 12 gauge.
 
The Whelen. I was in the very same situation a couple years back, only mine was a left hand 700 LSS. I now own 2 lh Whelens, not a single regret.
 
it's a long action, so go with a 375 whelen, and if you've already got once fired '06 brass you on step closer to blowing it out to .375

That 375WBY will not be seeing much if any action once a 35 Whelen gets in place.
 
Why choose the 95 year old poor mans magnum, which is still wet behind the ears compared to the OG 112 year old poor mans magnum, the 9.3x62?
 
Two peas in a pod........they both do the same job with equal aplomb and bullet availability is very similar for reloading............let's see HHHHMMMM a 35-06 or a 36-06............which is better? :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

The answer is..........neither, the 9.3-300 WM is KING of the mid bores (not including 375s of course):d:d:d
 
Not sure why you want to stay above 35 cal when you have a H&H..... A 338-06 would fit with your 45/70 and .375 Nicely........... Or you could build a 25-06.....

Of course, I don't know what your full collection looks like, so I may be speaking out of turn......
 
Having done all of the flavour of the year chamberings myself like 280 Rem, 280AI, 35 Whelen and having owned many others like 25-06, 270 Win and 6.5-06 I'd leave it as a 30-06.

The others won't do much that can't be done with an '06.

If you absolutely HAVE to rebarrel go 338-06. Why?,...simply because it's different. But don't do what some do like building a 338-06 and then loading it with 180's or 200's, you can shoot those in a 30-06.
 
I very much covered for the under .35's, there's no argument that the 30-06 will cover all my big game hunting needs, but it's just so plain vanilla. in the .338's the 338-378 has that itch covered.
