I have Issues - Priming on Hornady LnL

I've been reloading for about 6months, taking baby steps to make sure the end product is good. So today I felt like graduating from using Lee Auto Prime to having the LnL do it for me during the same cycle, saving about 10min per 100 rounds.

Here's what's happening: about 30% of the time primer doesn't seat deep enough. The LnL senses that & locks up, which is a good thing. However, having to nudge the plate back & pushing the handle forward once (sometimes twice) again isn't exactly making me happy. I looked, but found no way to adjust the primer seating depth. Besides, I see no reason why seating the primer for the 2nd or 3rd time always works - unless the primer gets pushed in slightly sideways, but I can't see why it would do that.

Is this a common problem with LnL users? If so, can you please suggest a remedy? TIA.

P.S. I would have kept using the Auto Prime because I hate picking primers by hand. But today I connected an LnL pickup tube to my AutoPrime and glued a buzzer to it from an old cell phone. The gismo looks like the discontinued product from Franklin Arsenal. The whole process now takes a minute or two.

You need to clean primer seater. Unscrew it from the bottom of the plate and give it good cleaning. There will be some fine metal shavings (primers 'shave' primer pockets when are seated) and gunk in there.

Thanks, is there anything else I can do? I cleaned the seater when I got the press, and also again today, but sill having problems.

make sure the shell plate hasn't loosen off. also check for debris in the slot for the piece the goes back and forth to pick up a primer. it gets in the front so it won't go all the way forward and the primer doesn't quite line up.

x2, this had jammed up primers and casings in my setup more than once...and its always brass shavings that cause it.

If you've already cleaned it, just try seating a little harder. It could be a brass problems, but if you're seeing it regulary, chances are its not.

Otherwise, call Hornady, they'll send you another one tout-suite.

Thanks, guys! I searched & found other guys having similar issues with CCI primers. Just gave it a try with Winchester, and all problems went away. Luckily, I only have 1 box of CCI primers left.

My DIY 'gizmo' is imperfect, it flips 1-2 primers per box. I need to work on it some more, or just learn to live with 1% defect - which is hard for people with OCD, you know... :)

P.S. Up until today, I deprimed, then tumbled, then did the rest. Today, I tumbled without depriming first, and cases came out just as clean inside & out. I don't think that clean primer pockets would be so critical for pistol reloading, do you? Not having to deprime 1st will save some time, too.

Thanks, I should be OK then. I only wonder how long should I wait from tumbling until reloading so that the pockets are completely dry. I don't heat-dry, but I hope a week of staying in a dry room should be enough.

Yes, it is a common issue with the LNL AP. There are lots of stories around the internet of people gluing dimes or other shims to the frames of the press where the primer ram contacts it to get a little deeper seating.
