I have received my new Savage hog hunter more than one year and a half later.

What's wrong with the stock, but an even better question is why in hell would you wait 18 months to get a .308 in a synthetic stock!?

Because I want a short barreled rifle (medium-contour barrel) with iron sights and I have a threaded barrel not bad for a $450 gun.

I received mine is 223 a few weeks back after a long wait as well and I'm really impressed with it so far. The iron sights are really nice and it was no issue to get them zeroed at 200 yards to bang gongs. I'm currently running a red dot in quick detach rings and am looking at a fixed power scope for coyotes for it. It is really accurate and I'm looking forward to building up hand loads for it. The stock doesn't feel as bad as alot of people say, try it out first for a while. I have read that there is also a bottom metal kit in the works for these guns which would be great.

The rear sight on mine is a Williams sight not a LPA as mentioned on the Savage web site? Bottom metal kit is expensive?

I agree it is nice to see, I just wish more of the manufactures would chamber them in smaller calibers like 308. I do not have much use for anything bigger then that. I wish Ruger would make a 308 with iron sights and a 18" barrel!

Wasn't the Ruger scout essentially what you're asking about? Or is one being sarcastically humorous? :p

Why the wait, my local dealer has had one on his shelf for about 5 months, it won't sell. I ended up getting a Ruger scout way nicer rifle.

I do believe there's a Hog Hunter on the rack in Home Hardware in Grande Cache, AB as well if anyone wants one and can't find it. Couple benefits of the Ruger are you already have a good stock from the get go and the detachable 10 round mags. More bucks though, but if you're upgrading the stock anyway on the Savage, and bottom metal... This said, no .223 versions of the Ruger.

I have to be honest I'm surprised someone hasn't bashed on it for being a savage and asked why you didn't buy something nicer in all the time you had to wait. I however am not one of those people and love my savage. That thing is ####ing AWESOME. I can't even imagine how great it would be if you were allowed to have a suppressor on the end. Paired with some sort of medium to long range tac scope. 10/10 my man.

Hey buster95, congrats on the new firearm. I recently got one in .308 as well. I'm liking it. It shot high outta the box, but I haven't had
the time to do much shooting with it.
Enjoy

I had one on order last year in .338 Win. Mag. through Epps, but changed the order
for a Rossi Ranch Hand. The RH is a fun little gun, but I still would like a Hog Hunter
.338 for hunting in the thick, wet crap.

I like the looks of the rifle as is, but I would machine up an aluminium bedding insert
to stiffen the fore end and foam fill the butt stock to deaden the hollow feel of it.
Overall, real neat little rifles for a decent price. :)

I liked my HogHunter in .308 so much I got a second one in .223. I always enjoyed short rifles with open sights. I had a Remington model 7 and a Tikka Battue in the past and also owned on of the early model Savage Scout rifles(no accue trigger or stock). Stupidly I let them all go on other trades. I was wanting a Ruger Scout but I didn't think that I wanted to pay the money they wanted. When I picked up the Savage HH I knew I wanted it. The backup sights look a little high but they work for me. The sight picture was close to my Battue.
I'm not too concerned about the tupperware stock or blind mag. Almost all of my bolt guns have been top feeders with hinged floorplate for unloading anyway. I've never had to do an emergency tactical reload shooting at water jugs at the range. Its half the cost of a Ruger Scout. Its the Working Mans Scout that you don't have to max out the remaing balance of credit card to buy. The only thing I might change is the soft recoil pad to a thinner hard rubber. Or try and round off the edges so it doesn't snag on clothes. And maybe add a AR style birdcage flash hider instead of the knurled nut.
