I HUNTED a Wolf

Actually, in Alberta you don't even need to have a big-game tag to hunt wolf, there just has to be an open big-game season in the WMU where you're hunting...

Wolf weighed in at just under 120 lbs. So it was probably just over that when one accounts for the blood that drained from it for the 2 days it was hanging.

Pics below show it in comparison to the deer we shot and my 95 lb Lab (the dog DID NOT appreciate posing for this pic).

Actually, from the start of any Big Game season in that WMU, through until May 31st, or June 15th if a Spring black bear season is open in that WMU until that date.

Nice wolf and great pics. Nice wolf you got there as well Dennis.

As stated by KDX, ignore the ignorant comments.

I took a poke at a big black bugger last month. Thought he was a bear when I first spotted him. 225 yds and through some thin poplars offhand. Either my aim was off a smidge or I clipped a branch, either way....opportunity lost. May be next time. Would have been better to drop down and try a stalk to get closer and through the trees but he was already looking at us so, with as twitchy as they tend to be, figured I'd better take my shot.

BTW, we are seeing LOTS more wolves in the areas we hunt. From seeing zero about 8-10 years ago, we started seeing one or two a year until now, when we tend to spot upwards of 7-8 over a week long hunt. Rarely do they present a shot, still kicking myself for the miss.

I do that too. But in the right areas. Road hunting is most effective in this area. Where the kid shot the doe the night before, stand hunting is most effective. We're equal opportunty hunters. So go :jerkit: yourself. :)
I fully support road hunting in my area. We have an over abundance of deer, a shortage of hunters (that walk), and 1mile x 2mile grid system. Why not use the "natural" terain to your advantage? The more deer that are taken from the roadways, the fewer deer I'm going to hit at O'dark 30.
On my way home Friday night, about 6:00 (dusk), there was at least 40 mulies grazing within 1/2 mile of my house...and those are only the ones that were standing in the open...

Yessir. I was just making the point that the requirement is for a Big-game season to be open in a given WMU (until May 31 or June 15, depending on BB season), with nothing mentioned about even holding a hunting license or tag.

Nice wolf, ignore the comments that you should. We've noticed a bunch more wolves when out at camp. One guy in our group saw a pack of wolves tear apart what looked like a rabbit through his scope about mid morning. We found out later that it was a missing beagle pup after the owners showed up at camp asking us to keep an eye open for him that evening.

Why the hell did I read the entire thread ... should have just read the 1st and last page ... CONGRATS on your wolf ... good on you ;)

I guess welderdude didnt catch the "I was hunted by a wolf" reference in the title?

Nice wolf!

It may surprise you if you put it on the scale. Wolves are almost as bad a bears for guys over estimating thier weight.

120 lbs was on the scale. I actually estimated about 100 lbs. Same scale read the dog as being 95lbs -- which is 5 pounds heavier than he was weighed in at during his last vet trip (he's been getting a lot of game trimmings the last month or so). So if the scale is off it is only off by about 5 pounds.

For the doubters -- sorry I can't reassemble him to satisfy your skepticism. Next time I'll lie and tell a riveting story about me trailing him for 3 days through a tundra-like wasteland and then state that he was 40lbs -- and really just a big coyote.

Don't sweat it. Most guys on this site have never seen a wolf, never mind weighed one! :D
