How's the 10mm shape up to the .40? I have a .40 already and want to know is it worth it to get a 10mm?
As others have mentioned,
most factory 10mm ammo is loaded to be pretty much the same as .40.
For example, this info is taken right off the boxes of some ammo. Unfortunately, I don't have exact apples to apples comparisons.
Federal American Eagle 10mm 180 grain muzzle velocity is 1030 FPS
Federal .40S&W 180 grain Hydra Shoks muzzle velocity is 1000 FPS
This is taken from the Federal Premium website:
Federal .10mm 180 grain Hydra Shoks muzzle velocity is 1030 FPS.
Federal does report some full 10mm loads. This is also taken right from the Federal Premium website:
"The new Vital-Shok™ Trophy Bonded 10mm Auto is a full-power load that takes complete advantage of the caliber's true capability. While most 10mm loads are watered down to produce ballistics similar to those of the 40 S&W, this cartridge offers the muscle needed for both big game hunting and personal protection. Its new Trophy Bonded Jacketed Soft Point bullet design makes the load even more effective. Based on the proven Trophy Bonded® Bear Claw® rifle bullet, its heavy jacket features a formed inner profile that preprograms and controls expansion to ensure deep penetration.
Features & Benefits
•Full-power 10mm Auto load provides superior downrange energy
•1275 fps muzzle velocity
•Trophy Bonded JSP bullet provides consistent expansion and deep penetration
•Nickel-plated case for easy extraction"
There is reloading data out there that will give you even more info.
I have some Hornady Custom load 180 grain XTP rounds that report a muzzle velocity of about 1180 FPS. That's still 100 FPS shy of those Vital Shok rounds mentioned above.
The G20 has a larger than normal grip to accomodate the extra 1/8 inch of length of the 10mm case. I like the grip but some folks find it a bit ugly and large.
I'm not sure what the grips are like on a G20 gen 4 though. I'm keen to try it if I see one around.
