I just bought a Winchester Model 70 manufactured in 1976 ... is it a piece of crap??

If it fills your needs and is dependable and shoots well it is NOT a piece of crap.
Friend of mine has a Winchester model 70 in 7mm Remington Mag purchased from the old Harkley and Haywood gun store in Vancouver in 1973.
Push feed instead of the controlled round feeding of the pre-64s.
He has downed a lot of moose with it and it shoots consistent sub 1.5 MOA with the Remington factory Core-Lokt 175 grain ammo.
It has never failed to fire and it has been dependable and trouble free.
Good gun even though it is post-64.

If its dependable, fits you well, shoots well, and you like it, who cares what the CGN "experts" think or say. The mod 70 is a great rifle, so is the rem 700, as are many other makes and models. Half, or likely much more, of the opinionated folks on here have never handled more then one or two firearms, and even less have actually taken game. Ignore them unless its someone you know or trust.

Exactly... Much like the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge debate... everyones got an opinion... I know what "I" like and don't really give 2 flying friggs what anyone else thinks.
Its easy to say "I drive a ford and its never been a problem, so you should buy one too because your chevy is a piece of junk, even though I've never owned a chevy..."
To each there own. Like the saying goes; "If the s*** fits... Wear it"
That being said a M70 is on the top of my list. Followed by a 700 or a Browning A or X bolt, a Marlin 336 my third pick, even though its not a bolt gun
I have a 1979 M70 in .270 that i bought at a gun show about 20years ago. Other than the bolt body cracking its been okay...... I'm sure it will be fine. The gunsmith who fixed it for me said he hadn't ever seen anythong like it, and he has been around a while.
Now you need a Sako, and a Ruger, and a Husqvarna, and a Parker Hale, and a Browning, and a Shultz and Larsen, and a Steyr, and a Mauser, and a BSA, and a TC, and...... well, you get the idea.

OK so I received both my Winchester model 70 NIB made in 1976 and my Remington 700 in great condition made in 1975. I completely stripped them both down to do my usual inspection, thorough cleaning, lubing which I do on all new gun purchases. I've "played" with them both, adjusted the trigger on them and I have to say.... the Winchester model 70 is by far the nicer gun... in both overall quality, handling, trigger and just plain old "feel". The Remington is a nice gun, don't get me wrong, and I am glad I bought it for comparison given my curiosity regarding which is better between the 2 guns, but compared to the Winchester I bought it loses hands down.
My lucky rifle was a re-stocked winchester 70 from 1975ish that I loaned to a guy. He got lost 2 winters ago in a blizzard, and lost his skidoo, my gun, and almost his life. He ended up walking back 80km in -42c. Frostbite to 20% of his body. I never said a word about the lost gun because he is still alive. BUT, man, I haven't shot a damn thing since I lost that rifle. I love the PF winchesters, cause most of them just plain shoot well. ( And I am one of those CRF guys, and own more CRF's than PF's) But I will say a rifle is a shooter if it is a shooter. No matter what action is used.
Sucks! Definitly far better to have your buddy than the rifle though!

All M70s are great, affordable, accurate reliable rifles. All of them.
And now you bought one and "know the rest of the story". You have a Winchester M70 by the way. Not an FN, a NF or Norinco or jazzed up mid-western clone.
Keep her as new, these will gain a whole new following in years to come!!
