I just "bubba'd" an enfield, for bear defense!

That's ur first attempt at making a stock?! He'll can ya make one for me? Move over Boyds... Cosy C is in that house!!

You made a good thing better IMO. That's not the original bolt as you know; how's the contact on the two lugs - even?

beautiful project gun there! I really like the idea, and i didn't mind the exaggerated Schnabel tip, but i like the streamlined version better. You sure did good work with the wood! Personally i'd prefer much less pistol grip, even a English stock on a rifle that short, and i'd loose the monte carlo and go with more of an European stock line (sako-ish)...buut as i say, that's me. And if you offered it to me as is i'd take it so fast the stock finish would bubble and smoke, so it's not huge issue!

Good job bringing a box of parts back to life! er...and let me know if your gonna do any more ;)

Yeah thanks, after looking at long enough I did decide the front didn't suit the rifle, oh well easier take more off then add more on. As for the grip shape, I know most folks prefer more traditional lines, but I find my wrist is in more of a natural position and not tilted down like on an unmolested enfield, I shaped the top of the grip so the crotch of your hand (between your thumb and index finger) preses tightly against the stock, and find it locks into my hand better then it might look.

Actually the one thing I really got right on it was the cheek rest, when I raise the rifle and shoulder it, it seems to bring the rear site up perfectly, I made the cheek rest big and widdled away at it till it seemed right, definately one thing worth spending time on out of all the time spent in the garage on it.

RRCo: As for the lugs and the bolt, I had no idea it wasn't original or that I should check, I thought it was just the long lug on the side of the bolt and not two lugs?, I would have assumed that was looked into when it was re-barreled, perhaps I should check into it though.

I just like straight stocks, i find they point really fast and come on target quicker....and if the sights line up as you get your cheek weld, hey, you did more then good, you did great! The part where your thumb locks in looks like it might thump your thumb with heavy loads, but that's just guessing on my part. Long and short is, i couldn't have made that stock, and it looks awesome. Sorry if it sounded like i was hacking on ya, i was voicing my stock preferences, and looking back, i had no good reason to, it's your thread, and your beauty of a project. Again, good on you!

I didn't take any offense to any of the comments, it comes down to a matter of cosmetic preference, and in that arena everyone has a different idea of what is right, and it's also part of showing off your handi-work is getting all sorts of criticism.

As for the pistol vs. straight grip, I rolled my wrist a few times when i was younger and my range of motion may be different then others now, but this fits me best and I find the the crotch of my hand receives the recoil better with that shape then sliding through my grip with a straight grip, just works better for me, you'll have to try it one day.

So... It's done and has a proper (NECG) front site and has been blued, also I changed the shape a bit, knocked a bit off the overall length on the butt stock, a bit off the front from all the "looks like a ####" comments, and took some off the palm swell(?) as it was a bit much and I'm happier with it now, anyways, it's done and getting a few coats of varathane nano floor finish, just thought I'd update/finalize the thread:

Looks way better now. I do some woodworking, but I'm not sure I'm up to that level of challenge.

I'll happily take you up on that offer if i ever get out Alberta way. If you make it to Ontario, look me up, i'm sure i'll have something you'd enjoy shooting too :)

Seriously, if you're ever in Calgary send me a PM, I've probably got a couple to take out for a range day you might enjoy shooting.

As for this being difficult or only to be done by those of high skill, I think many of you might surprise yourselves, just get out the tools and start taking off a bit of wood here and there, trace an outline of the style you want, start big and slowly widdle it down.

I actually went through one other rear butt stock on this, the first one the drill bit blew a hole out the wrist of it, the second one I drilled first, bolted a big square block of wood to and then marked it out and took a skill saw and belt sander to. Inch by inch as they say, and it's a much more fun way to spend a couple hours in the evenings then watching the news.

As for producing more of these, I'd be happy to if you guys would like to take care of some drywall, mud and paint in my house while I'm in the garage. ;)

Edit; to be honest, I've actually been thinking about building another, though quite different in style but still a full stock.

basically I'm thinking about building something from a sporter #3, style wise, half way between the steyr scout and this green thing below pilfered from the net:

Just not sure if I want to commit the crime of chopping the barrel down, it's been drilled before it was in my hands and I've modified and mounted a picatinny rail to fit using the front site ramp.

Kind of want to do my own version of the ultimate scout rifle, but these poor old war horses have had their share of hacksaw makeovers already.

What do you guys think?
