I killed something with my black rifle today

I haven't heard of yotes KILLING a person But there have been children mauled by yotes in Oakville Ontario just last year. I know for a fact that yotes will hunt and kill domestic dogs up to the size of full grown boxers. I say shoot enough of them that the remaining ones are good and scared of people.

I'm in Hamilton/Oakville, and I remember that. I think it was actually this year, just at the beginning of it.

Not that I would defend coyotes, but that was a highly anomalous event - I think it actually jumped over the backyard fence and bit the little boy on the leg before he got into the house. As awful as that was, you're much more likely to lose a family pet to a coyote than a family member.

Coyote killing a human? Never heard of that. t.

Coyotes have indeed killed a human and it happened only a few years ago. I also recall a number of aggressive coyotes in the WhiteCity area east of Regina a few years back. They tried to take a youg child off some playground equipment, after that we had a big coyote cull where the Gov't paid us to kill em. Man was that good times ;)

That's crazy, they seem to be growing in numbers and getting closer and closer to the city but to attack a human, wow!
I live 10 min outside of a small town west of Edmonton and you can hear them howling all night, they aren't far away but so far I've only caught a glimpse of one close to my house, it bolted back onto the forest reserve as soon as I went outside. Lucky for me my dog is 85 pounds so she should be pretty safe and I hate cats and tiny dogs so the neighbors pets can go missing and it won't hurt my feelings at all.
Some days I feel like sitting on the deck with a 22 and practicing with my call to see what happens but unless they become a problem I'll probably just leave them alone for now.

I have a handload for my HK with 60gr Barnes varmint that is doing just a tad over moa which may just have to be tested on some yotes soon. The Specter DR is so clear and bright I'll be able to go right till dusk ;)

Coyote killing a human? Never heard of that. They kill livestock that my friends family depends on for income so I'm more than happy to help them out.
They are becoming a real problem around Edmonton, some dumbsh!t has been feeding them according to the reports on the radio.
Wish I had my HK with me the other day, there was a really mangey one running around in a field on my way into town. Location wasn't the best but it definitely needed to be put down, hardly had any fur left.

This was a few years ago now, but a fatal Coyote attack none the less.

looks like a black rifle induced doggie dirt nap to me!
Nicely done!

I'm anxiously awaiting our first snow so my XCR and acog can go do a little as well.

We had a coyote in downtown Winnipeg a couple years ago, too lazy to google it but it probably followed the river into downtown then it ran into a parkade where animal control caught it.

This year will be my first year going for coyotes. I'm testing my first batch of loads this saturday, I've named this load "Hornady Hound Killer"

Edit- rifle is an xcr in 5.56

Its not the kill we take pride in, its the skill required to make such a shot. If I could shoot varmints without killing them and thus have the option of shooting them over and over again, I would. Unfortunately the anatomy of animals coupled with the physics of high velocity projectiles makes that a non starter..

TDC

Nicely stated;)

I agree it was an anomaly. I was pretty surprised when I heard about it.

Some parents may have laughed last week when they received a letter from St. Joan of Arc Catholic Elementary School in Oakville describing the coyote lockdown on Jan. 11, when students were kept inside the classroom during the lunch hour after one was spotted prowling the schoolyard earlier in the day.

But after a brazen coyote leapt over a backyard fence to attack an 8-year-old girl on Thursday afternoon, the entire town is on heightened alert for the howling carnivores, which have been known to prey on small pets, but are usually considered harmless to humans.

“I think it’s becoming a little scarier for sure,” said Kevin Corcoran, who lives on Canonbridge Circle, a few doors down from where 8-year-old Julia Couto was bit on the thigh as she played with a friend.

Corcoran helped police locate what was believed to be the culprit coyote, which was shot and killed. The natural resources ministry gave police permission to shoot the animal after the attack.

“My kids are scared,” Corcoran said. “They won’t go out in the front yard anymore.”

Oakville residents, particularly those living between Bronte and Sixteen Mile creeks, are accustomed to sharing their neighbourhood with coyotes and other wildlife. The area is dotted not only with popular golf courses, but also small creeks and ravines, trails and parks.

“Urban coyotes are a fact of life here,” said Cindy Toth, the town’s director of environmental policy.

But residents used to hearing the animal’s howl have been put on edge this month by an apparently aggressive coyote or coyotes.

In addition to the schoolyard scare, two small dogs were attacked by coyotes this week, one fatally. Neighbours have also been gossiping about a male jogger who was apparently attacked by a coyote on one of the region’s trails. Halton police could not confirm the report.

Town officials are confident the animal shot Thursday was the “problem coyote,” but they still encourage residents to remain alert, reminding them never to feed the animals and asking them to be aware of any unintentional food sources left outside.

Corcoran said he and his neighbours have taken to wearing cowbells while walking dogs, or shaking cans filled with screws to ward off any potential coyotes.

Julia’s mother, Jenny Couto, said she is thankful her daughter was wearing snow pants at the time of the attack or her wound — three small bite marks and bruising — could have been much worse. “It was a scary ordeal for her, but it’s not usual coyote behaviour.”

Derek Quinlan, whose daughter Sydney was playing with Julia when the attack occurred, said after he heard the children scream and he ran into the living room, the coyote stood steadfast on his backyard deck, staring straight at the children through the sliding glass door.

It’s unclear what may have caused the aggressive behaviour. Town officials are awaiting results of an autopsy of the killed animal to see if it was rabid, or if there is evidence it had been fed by humans.

Meanwhile, Julia appeared unfazed a day later as she fielded interview requests and spoke to TV cameras before she was to take a quick trip to hospital. “I’m going to get a rabies shot!” she said, smiling.

The town is holding a coyote information session at 9 p.m. Jan. 31 at the St. Volodymyr Cultural Centre, 1280 Dundas St. W.

Wendy Cukier is an ignorant, man-hating socialist cow. Whew, someone just had to say it while we are talking about using our black rifles for hunting. :)
