I learned a little about metal yesterday.

So I had the front sight on my Marlin 1895 replaced with a Williams "Firesight" because my crappy eyes could not see the original one very well. I decided it might be a good idea to drill a hole on the top of the sight hood to let more light in, which should make the sight even brighter.

After trying to drill a hole in the hood, I realized I have a lot to learn about metal LOL. I could not even make a scratch in the metal with my regular bits or my Titanium coated bits.

Lucky for me, I have a buddy who is a machinest, and after he stopped laughing at me, he drilled the hole for me with if I remember correctly, a cobalt bit.

So much to learn..... so little time. :D

For sure I attempted to drill it with the hood off lol I had the hood in a vise. I tell ya, no regular drill bit can make a mark in that kind of metal. I think he called it spring steel, that's been hardened, or something like that.

spring steel is very hard lol.

cobalt or carbide would do the trick nicely.
in general with a firesight i leave the hood off. even a hole or 2 wont make a heck of a difference to the brightness.

I thought of that also, but I walk through some thick bush, and I figured the sight will take a beating from branches, which is why I want to leave the hood on.

I looked at that ghost sight also, looks pretty interesting, but I will stick with the Williams for this hunting season and see how it goes.

Bush and hood

Heavy bush + sight hood = metal hood lost somewhere in the bush (usually)

Here's the cutaway hood that comes with the Wild West setup.

HA that happened to me 3 weeks ago on my 45-70 .. my scope was fked and i was waiting for replacement from Leupold (ya i scoped my 45-70 cuz i cant see there sites for s*!T ) anyways im trucking through the bush and im going past a small spruce and i hear.. PINGGGGGGGGGGGG.. i see it! i see it fall down! you think i could find that fkin hood at my feet in the grass.. 20 full min of looking i said fk it..

then i get a deer in my sights at 100 Yards and wait.. the sites are bigger than the whole deer basically .. anyways i didn't shoot it(didn't wana just guess) and said FK irons again.. got my scope back put it on.. and guns shooting really good now :p -- 200 yard shots NP-- im actually liking these Lever evolutions there pretty accurate with a little flatter shooting than my Hard Cast's @ 1800 fps..

now my winchester 30-30 (also missing guard) now those sites are much better than my marlins.

I'm trying these leverevolutions also. I have only sighted in at 50yrds since there is no chance I will shoot beyond that when I am in the bush. How much do you figure the bullet drops at a hundred yards ???? or does it???
