I Like 20" ARs-Does That Make Me a Freak?

Definitely not as fancy as some but its non-restricted so that counts for something.

Redshooter, I could never get into those collapsing stocks.
Even the C7A2 style. I just found it strange that I could never find a comfy position for that stock, with or without body armour.
Nothing seemed to fit me like the fixed C7A1 stock.

I really like the fixed stock as well, that's a fixed carbine stock, the temp spacer helps, but it needs to be pretty much twice that thickness. I thought I liked a shorter butt, I was mistaken. I'm going to replace it with a rifle stock, but I think I need a new trigger first.

What is the sight you have mounted?

:d It's a 1.5-4.5X20 Bushnell Scopechief. I put it on to work up a 55gr and 75gr load. I got it really cheap at a show with the intention of getting something else later, but I really like it.

Awesome. I have a 16" & 7.5". I used to have a 10.5" & will again in the near future.
At first i thought he said he liked 20 ARs & i was like "sure, that's not crazy. I like 40+"

Oh wait, where's your 16"? You don't like 16"?

I knew someone would catch that :(
Holding out for something special in 16. LOL

I like big barrel and cannot lie.... It's not the size it's what you do with it.

Seriously thought doesn't the longer barrel on the 20 inch barrels yield more accuracy?

.

^^^ @ cbabes - nice Ace stock! Love that look... just removed mine for my 'C7A1' half-assed clone, and already regretting it a little bit!

not necessarily. Slightly higher muzzle velocity, which means less drop over a given distance, but not necessarily better accuracy. Many other factors come into play.

Especially stability issues with heavy/long for caliber bullets. A barrel that will shoot sub moa at 200 with 55 gr projectiles may balloon to many MOA with the odd keyhole if shooting 77 gr match. Ammo is as big a part of the equation as what you launch it from

Some better shots of my 20" PWS build. Started off as a HBAR mated to an Armalite upper:

Sure, literally. So maybe that length is overall and maybe barrel length matters. 18.6 is unique and for some reason.

From what I've heard Colt Canada does some pretty extensive testing and 18.6" must be the sweet spot for longer barrels just like the 15.7" is the sweet spot for mid length rifles. I'd love 18.5" AR-15's to become NR but I have my doubt it's the reason CC made theirs 18.6" But I'd be okay waking up tomorrow looking like a fool for posting this if the 18.6" was then NR.

And have a barrel length of 18.5" or greater if itst a semi auto

The simplified classification system proposed by the CSSA is for overall length.

Well clearly barrel length is a big part of overall length.

Yes but if the CPC will actually follow the simplified classification system then the OAL must be at least 26" (660mm)

Even a collapsed 10.5" AR-15 is over 26" so would technically be considered Non-restricted.

However the CPC may change some of these rules if they get back in power and decide to implement this classification system. I just hope my 16" AR could become NR....I dream of the day I can take it out into the bush.

That's a gorgeous rifle. Shot any groups with it yet?

Always wanted to take my old C7A1 from the early 90s home... finally more-or-less have it :)

Are you ever going to add the Elcan used back in the day?

I still like the A1... probably just my era. The newer A2 just looks weird to me with the full-length barrel and collapsable stock.

I agree on both counts and prefer the looks and feel/performance of a C7A1 over the A2.

Other then perhaps an XM177/CAR-15 the C7A1 is my sentimental favourite...

Cheers D

Not yet, built the thing almost a year ago, but I've been addicted to bolt guns lately.

Will try to make some time and see how she does for groups. Don't reload yet, but I have a case of Hornady Steel Match and a few boxes of SMKs to try out.
