I like the killing

It all about the blood on the ground thats why i hunt meat is just the bonus after the horns. I love to see the triple backflip double pike explosion of guts and blood of a gopher when shot with a 7mm rem mag soon to be a 338 lapua

I love hunting, I live for it actualy. I love all parts of the hunting, from bullet testing and load developent to scouting and butchering. And guess what else... I like shooting (and gasp)..KILLING game. Yes that is right boys and girls. I actualy like killing the food I eat. I enjoy it. I am not going to appologize for it either.

It seems lately that hunters act like they don't like the killing part. That is fine by me if they honestly don't like it, I can respect that. Unfortunatly it seems like many down play thier enjoyment of killing. Like it is somehow a bad thing to do now days. This does not sit well with me. I don't want the next generation of hunters to be endlessly appologizing for actualy killing something. Things live, we kill them, then we eat them so we can live.

So there, when it comes to hunting for food I like the killing part just as much as the rest of it. And I am not going to say sorry for it.

Does anyone else feel the same as me?

Hey man, I feel exactly the same way as you do. I call it "the instinct to hunt", and the more of the hunting instinct you have the better of a hunter you are IMO!

If I'm hunting small game I'll often give up an easy shot. Sometimes with big game too, unless it looks like a good eater. I like challenging shots but ones I know I can make, not chancy ones.

This means I come back empty handed most times. Pretty good excuse, huh.

Ya, there's got to be more to it than the meat, ... the beer, getting away from the wife etc. etc. cause when you figure all the costs, the meat is well over $100.00 a pound.

As soon as you start moralising the killing of game that you plan on eating or dangerous game that you had to shoot, then you should stop hunting and stop going to the bush with guns.

If the kill doesn't set well with you then hunt with a camera.

Hunting with guns in its true essence is killing. Can't do one without the other and if your conscious is burning up because of it then it may be time to find another hobby.

Doing something that you don't like by choice is kind of like wiping your butt before you take a crap, just doesn' make sense.

For me the killing sits just fine in my mind. Its just not my favorite part.

I am a hunter. I need to hunt. Its a hard wired thing that's been with me from before I can remember. There was a spell where I got more in to chasing women and having fun other ways and didn't hunt, but I always come back to hunting.

I love getting out, scouting - finding the sign then the prey and squeezing off a shot just perfectly when one's so lucky. The actual rush though doesn't come into effect for me until I confirm that he's done. Sending a critter cartwheeling or whatever just ain't my favorite part, that's all. :)

Appreciating a good kill while hunting is totally different than "Liking killing for killings sake" I too take great satisfaction killing game animals I plan on eating or pests that need to be controlled.

Killing lust however is something different, If for instance you are driving down the highway and a stray dog is walking on the shoulder do you go out of your way to hit and kill it with your vehicle? How about a homeless person stolling along with a shopping cart? Are they fair game too? Does killing something, anything, give you a feeling of power and control? Do you start killing cats and work your way up to bigger, more intelligent creatures just to get your rocks off? That is what I think of when someone says they "Like killing"

I totally agree. I shot my first deer in November and when I found it laying there dead, its just like "OMG I shot a deer. I just killed a damn big living creature." Theres alot of other reasons I enjoyed it though. I also enjoyed skinning it, butchering it, eating it, getting drunk after shooting it, driving the quad through all the mud all week, playing cards and betting on the Saturday night hockey games, and hearing stories go around the camp at night.

Its a whole experience all in its own. Ill never quit hunting now.

I don't like killing pets or old ladies pushing shopping carts, that is a bit silly. Ya, sometimes I like killing for killing sake. I enjoy smacking a gopher and swatting a fly. Who dosent like killing mosquitoes?

I have no problems about killing anything if its justified. I don't go around and shoot things just for the hell of it... well... ok but only varmin. If its a pet... All I do is say "im sorry" And then 'Bang'.... and then clean up the mess. Although a female relitive in south america says she just uses an ax... as bullets cost money :D ... The only animals I have cut the head off a living animal is chickens, goose, and turky... Anybody else find it just crazy how much running around they can do without there head?

If I happen upon wounded gopher... I usualy just step on them. Sometimes I scare myself because of the lack of emotion/remorse.

killing

I hunt and i enjoy the killing part too. Lets be honest the act of shooting a large animal watching it's death quivers and losing bowel control and frothy blood come out of it's nosse, then remove it's still steaming hot guts then hanging it up and skinning it and then having a beer with crusty blood under your fingernails is a fairly raw and violent act. I experience a bit of an emotional/mental "come down" form the whole thing. but this is what you have to do to eat meat on your own terms. I don't kill things for no reason. that is murder. Killing meat for food i believe won't give you bad karma and you don't have ot apologize for it. It is part of our human experience, if our ancestors felt too bad to kill for meat then we would have gone extinct. Killing is like ###, there are few other experiences that can even come close to the same feelings for a reason. Our brains are hardwired to enjoy it so we do it so we will survive. Wolves don't feel bad because they kill baby moose so their babies won't starve. That is just the way it is.

I didn't read all the posts so pardon any possible repetition. Those who do not hunt, yet eat meat and condemn hunters at the same time are incredible hypocrites. If you choose to insulate yourself from the kill by buying prewrapped meat, that is your wont - however don't come down on those who enjoy the hunt.... I can say that of the 8 moose I've shot, the memory of all 8 dying ring home sadly to me. Its not a pleasant sight and I consider the act of killing distasteful, but I do recognize there is some primal urge in continuing to do so. I think that the future of our sport demands that we all show respect to the critters we've killed. Pictures or videos of us treating dead game without that respect put our sport in jeapordy and weaken our cause.
There is a strong feeling of independence, a feeling like I can beat my chest and yell "I feed family!" when I take game, clean and care for it, then butcher it and prepare it for dinner. We hunters is enlightened!

I've never been hunting yet, but I've fished all my life, and to this day when it comes to cleaning a still living fish, the moment i do the first cut will occasionally give me 2nd thoughts, sort of a mild, what am i doing ? sorry little guy... moment. I imagine that the moment of pulling the trigger may bring similar thoughts. That said, I'm well aware of where meat comes from and there's only one way to get there, I enjoy the resulting meal, but the thought of having ended a life tickles me. One more reason to say a quick prayer before dinner I guess.

While it's not true for everyone of course, many of us take pleasure from hunting in different ways as we grow older. As a boy, I pursued game vigorously with hand thrown stones, sling shots, BB and pellet guns, buckets of water and clubs (flushing out and clobbering gophers of course!), and eventually real firearms. In my teen years, and well beyond, I was usually too excited to sleep well the night before a planned hunt. I loved everything about it...especially the succesful kill. I also took considerable pleasure from running a trapline for a number of years...no kill shots, but success translates to killing just like hunting. I still love hunting, but as I get older, my desire to kill something is far less urgent, and the respect I have for other living things is much increased. One of my thoughts is that as you age and begin to recognize and accept your own mortality, you begin hold all life in greater reverence. While "remorse" is somehow not the correct word to describe that feeling I have after a kill, there is a sense of some sort, quite opposite to that of the delight which I get from a succesfully concluded hunt. My dad, who was a hunter from boyhood, is now 80 years old. When I spoke to him recently about some of my upcoming hunting plans, he commented that he didn''t think he could shoot anything again. On the other hand, I have a similarly aged uncle who continues to be as actively involved in hunting as his physical limitations will allow...guess we're just not all the same, and I'm pretty sure that's a good thing.

I love the kill. I don't love killing.

I always feel a slight moment of sadness over the passing of an animal. I also feel the elation of having made a good clean kill and knowing there'll be meat in the freezer and that I put it there.

It's a weird contradition in a way, one that non-hunters likey won't understand. If i liked the killing, i'd work in a slaughterhouse. There's a difference between the kill and the killing.

Personally I don't mind killing but if it Isn't a clean kill and I close with the animal to finish it of I am a bit of a pussy and feel sorry for the animal, (No I don't squat to pee) Had an interesting conversation with a friend (non-hunter, vegtable savage)

He's whole argument is that if he doesn't have to cause death he's not gonna do it. So how do you argue with that?
