Waterfowler Heritage Days: Waterfowler Heritage Days provide young hunters under the age of majority with the opportunity to practice hunting skills, learn about wildlife conservation, and reinforce safety training in a structured, supervised environment before the season opens for other hunters. Licensed adult hunters who serve as mentors have an opportunity to pass on their considerable skills and knowledge by offering guidance and advice to younger hunters. The following rules are in effect:

to participate, young hunters under the age of majority do not require the federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit;
young participants must comply with all existing safety and licensing requirements found in the Firearms Act and provincial hunting regulations;
participants must be accompanied by a licensed mentor over the age of majority; and
mentors may not hunt or carry a firearm, and may accompany no more than two young hunters.

I think it's great too as long as it isn't taken advantage of.

As Sealhunter knows, ducks aren't quite as plentiful here on the Avalon as they are in places like Alberta. If you aren't willing to go duck hunting 3 weeks before the season opens here, you're going to have a hard time getting ducks. It's ridiculous. I've heard shots already this year.:mad: I guess I'll spend this opening day checking empty ponds, the ducks are already in someones freezer.

I can see it being used as an excuse to "legally poach" ducks before the season opener around here. It's a real shame if it is. This is a great way to introduce young people to the sport while the ducks are still a little less jumpy.

I was partridge hunting a few years ago on Heart's Content barrens. First day of the season. I found a spot where numerous birds had been cleaned as well as a few fresh shell hulls, they were obviously taken before the season opened...

I was in the country today helping my Uncle build a cabin. I took along the .223 as it was opening day for Coyotes and figured I may get lucky. Well, about 10 minutes from the road I spot 10-12 geese in a steady about 100 yards away. May not sound like a big deal to some guys, but around here you rarely get the opportunity to take a goose. I won't lie, I was REALLY REALLY tempted to take a shot at them but couldn't bring myself to do it.

I gotta feeling I know where I'm heading next saturday though, lol.

How do you know they were poachers for sure, maybe they were natives hunting and not breaking any laws?
