I love steel (homebuilt target)

I built this a couple weeks ago out of mostly scrap laying around the garage. I already had a couple cheap store bought reactive targets but the duraseal reaction is a bit lame and the steel "rimfire" target deformed after a few hundred hits. I also wanted a target inspired by the airgun field targets with a body plus a seperate kill zone but without the need to be reset.

The round disks are 2.5" and just under 2" diameter while the IDPA target is 1/4 scale. Most of the target is 1/4" thick cold rolled steel or 3/16" ??? while the axle is 3/4" dia and all the impact surfaces hang slightly in front of the axle centerline so they angle down by a few degrees. There is no damage to the 1/4" and very little to the 3/16" after a couple boxes of CCI SV and SK Std+ at 50 yards. The targets react strongly and ring quite well. From a previous test Velocitors at 25 yards will leave a mark on 1/4" cold rolled steel so I'll stick to match / std vel / sub-sonic ammo. The 3/4" plywood stops all of the splatter but it is a wear item.

The only build issue was one of the IDPA bodys wraped slightly when welded causing the dual arm / bushings to bind lightly on the shaft (only 0.020" clearance). I new this was likely to happen (bad design practice but has some advantages) and I was able to re-align the bushings after several very careful applications of excessive force.

This was also a good excuse to use up 4 or 5 partial cans of spray paint. Once the rest is consumed I'll stick with a couple colours of fast dry paint for at the range touch ups.

"..several very careful applications of excessive force" Made me laugh....great design and looks like a lot of fun.

I almost broke the corner off the table my bench vice was clamped to trying to re-align the bushings.

For anyone looking to build something similar, 1/4" cold rolled steel is the minimum for standard velocity 22 with NO damage. I'd look for something harder if you're thinking about supersonic ammo and want it to last.

All I need now is another warm weekend so I can go to the range and play with it again.

Really great work, why not make a grackle shaped FT style target? I have a set of the
Gamo field targets but for air guns only with the extra shape kit that i really enjoy shooting.
Personally i would rather bang away at a set of reactive targets like you have there than paper any day.
Thanks for sharing.

The IDPA targets yield 3 different sizes of target (1.5" square head, ~2.15" diameter kill zone and ~4.5" x 6" body) and is an easy shape to cut out with a hole saw and cutoff wheel. It would only take a few minutes to swap targets on the shaft so I may make a couple different shapes or sizes over the winter. I shot metallic silhouette with handgun and smallbore rifle in my teens so a set of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams are on my short list.

I have also thought about building a couple proper field targets that only drop with a hit to the KZ but I don't think the string remote reset would work very well with longer distances and heavier targets.
