I messed up my Mark 3

I am majorly pissed off. While disassembling my Ruger Mark 3, I forgot to take out the mag before hammering (with a rubber mallet) the back of the barrel to take it off the receiver. As a result, I think I crooked the extractor and I stupidly forced the bolt back in. Now everything is solidly jammed. i have a broken gun and I think I will have to bring it to a gunsmith.

I had to share. Thanks for being there guys.

It's good to vent, sorry to hear about it. I'd be ticked too.

The grief I hear about field stripping and cleaning Ruger Mk's are the only thing stopping me from ever owning one. Tack drivers maybe, but a pain otherwise.

That gun is so frustrating, I try to put off cleaning it as much as possible but .22LR is always so dirty...One thing you can do once you get it unjammed is to install a Mark 2 or SAMs bushing, then you won't need to worry about using the mag for takedown or reassembly.

Main reason to perform the mag disconnect mod on these HG's.
First few times taking down a Ruger MK series may be annoying but if you can handle a manual can opener you'll be fine….

Gillis not sure where you are at but if in Calgary and you are interested I would be happy to split the shipping cost as I am going to get it and another item from Joe

Thanks for your offer Reeferman but as I am in Quebec, I will have to pass.

Thanks all for your support :)

I hate it when I do ham fisted stuff like that and sadly I've done plenty and I know that I'll be doing more before I'm done. It happens when you do your own work. You'll make it right and make a comeback!

Don'y worry there is no law saying you can't screw up your own gun. We have all done it in one way or another at some time. Just don't make the same mistake twice.

Then you are one of the lucky few ,although the 22/45 is much easier to take down then the standard Mark lll with the all steel frame..

Always see videos of people hammering the back even on 22/45s and Im like huh.

No problem. Joe has been a master smith for many years and his tools are great. Good luck with your gun.

A tool isn't going to help. Best is take it to a smith.

Ditto. The 22/45 seperate easy peazy. I never whacked a reg MKII or MKIII with a mallet though, I'm surprised anyone does that. I'd cover the top end rear with a heavily folded up towel/rag and then whack it with the heel of my hand till I felt it separate. Worked fine on all the Ruger's I've had.

I find they usually come apart easier with a few takedowns. Maybe the material just "relaxes".

Not even I got a March 2015 model 22/45 and I didnt even need to do a wack. Held the grip, held the muzzle and pulled apart.. It went pop.

I have a Mk III too. It is a pain to take down, but once you have done it a few times,, no problem. Patience is more important than tools. How often do you strip yours? I find that once a year is enough. Mine sees 1000's of rounds every month.

Good on you for owning up. We all screw something mechanical up sometime, but it can be a great learning experience! And expensive sometimes as well, but for those of us that like to understand how something works, it's a necessity! It'll work out.
