Well, I don't post much these days, just too busy with other stuff.
Hunting season has been good so far with some deer down and I've been prepping for my moose hunt in a few days.
My hunting partner can't go this year. His wife is fighting cancer and involved in a special cancer trial so he needs to be home. I got him out a couple weeks ago and we banged some deer together and had a real good time. Was nice hunting just the two of us without the group around.
The rest of the crew is either in school or tied up with work obligations.

I am hesitant to go for moose alone due to my physical limitations but I have lots of recovery gear, a Yamaha grizz 550 , my big dodge diesel and my ####ty ol hunting camper. I also have a freezer with no moose meat left in it.... just 2 elk roasts from last February and this season's deer.
So I'm going to make the 6 hour drive north into region 6 to my favorite moose spot, shared with me by CarverK a few years back.

my camp has intermittent mobile service so might do some updates while I'm on my trip.
anyhow..... I'm leaving the morning of the 19th for my own misguided adventure.......

I always used to bring a chainsaw and a 4 litre bottle of vegetable oil with me when i hunted moose alone...... a little crude, but makes the job quicker.....lol
 
Ovwr the past 35+ years, I have hunted moose solo more often than not... I have taken out more than a dozen bulls solo by canoe, with one, two and on one occasion three portages... it is work but with persistence, it gets done. Good luck.
 
done tonnes of deer hunting solo. last years trip was a doozy shooting two in the steep terrain in pemberton LOL
I'll be okay.

as for chainsaw and veggie oil. I did that before but life changed when I got a Makita rechargeable reciprocating saw. Much finer bone debris and a bit easier to control than the chainsaw. But ya man, I still have a little poulan 16" chainsaw that has quartered a few animals in it's time.

as for the area I'm headed being open.... sure is. 1 week only, any bull. Should be good, they have drastically reduced the LEH tags for my particular area so there won't have been many hunters thru. I think the LEH tags were reduced to ONE for the hunt before mine. have done well for youngish bulls the past few years and I'm hoping that luck holds.
As much as it's nice to get a monster.... I don't want one this trip hahahaha but will take the opportunity should it present.

I have switched to a reciprocating saw as well....... funny story about getting rear ended and my trunk not being able to close and going to cop shop to report it with a very bloody reciprocating saw in there...... maybe for another day......

If you get one, just take your time....... imop, people rush too much to "preserve the meat" when it really isn't all that necessary....
 
I see guys heading out with dedicated dewalt mini saws with several battery packs.. Seen them do quick work. Im young enough to use the bone saw, but speed and clean cuts helps when your solo.
 
figured I'd throw this out there.
any of you new or newish hunters here that have read my mentoring thread.... if you got yer own camper and quad and a way to get it north into region 6.... for the 20th to 26th
shoot me a message :D
 
Shot my moose last year in the archery opening solo. It's not too bad. Take your time and it goes pretty smoothly. My dad just got back from 6-9 and there was a fair bit of snow already and there were expecting another 3 or 4 days of snow.

I have no worries on going solo, save for vehicle breakdowns and such. I always get the jitters beforehand tho. I'm well equipped or like to think so.
I'm closer to the eastern border of region 6 so not going in as far as 6-9 though I used to hunt the Nadina area some years ago. drive bc puts 2 cm of snow on the ground and clear highways with no road condition warnings so hopefully that holds for the next week or so. I live in the interior well off the beaten path as it is so not too worried about snow. Once it hits a foot I might get a bit nervous but otherwise..... have Vbar semi truck chains, 33" duratracs and 4wheel drive so not too worried.

Good luck - being an old Northern BC hunter, I haven't been out there in many moons. I have buddies that are always looking for new guys to add to the party, let me know, I'll hook you up...
 
Man I wish I knew what you were up to earlier. I owe you for all your help on this year's moose hunt. One observation I had was if I had the quad ramps and a piece of plywood in the box, it would have made getting the critter in the truck easier rather than having to pick it up. You're almost there if you bring the quad. Although there won't be a ton of room left for the quad. Best of luck old boy.
 
My custom quad trailer works pretty good. I have a hitch mount below my winch on the quad so If I drop one, hike back to quad, rip back to camp and grab hitch and trailer. Drag moose to trailer ramp, then hookup the front of the quad to the trailer and run the winch cable thru and to the moose. Winch it on deck and tow it to camp. HAHA I got it all figured out eh? probably not !! Tho we have taken bulls in the same cut block 3 years in a row , pretty much plan to stick to my usual calling spots. I can get the quad up and right to the moose if needed where I plant to go. Who ever silvicultured that cutblock cleaned it up real nice LOL. I can skid it right down to the trailer whole and tow it with the quad back to camp and the game pole. We have a system hehehe just this time there is no "we". I'm gonna stick to the areas I can manage a retrieval from and gonna bring my pelican ice fishing sled for dragging quarters..... or eighths if needed haha

Bongobob left for a hunt a few hours north of my spot but I gave him directions I think LOL he said he might try and hook up on his way back down maybe.
I'm pretty pumped and looking forward to this.

Been snowing wet stuff everyday and just below freezing at night. Mostly melts through the day. The local outfitter is hammering them on the lake (Babine Lake west of where you go). Bush is very wet right now but you should have fresh tracking snow in the mornings. Loggers are working right now so pay attention. Good luck.
