OK, so to tell the story; when i was 10 years old , i got a brand new Lakefield .22 single-shot for my birthday !!(which i STILL have), it was the coolest thing ever....my very fist rifle on my 10th birthday !!. Well in a month and a half, my son will be turning 10...SO..what better gift , than HIS FIRST RIFLE !!. he has been shooting often with me, and very much enjoys it, but i think he'll really love it when he has one of his very own !!

Well i may have gotten a tad carried away (according to my wife), i started off with a used plain jane 10/22, then got the Butler Creek stock and heavy target barrell for it, then a couple 25 rd mags, then a bi-pod, and just recently a brand new 4-12X-40mm scope with parallax adjustment !!

Problem being, is now i want to keep it for myself and get the boy a cheapy .22 !!!LOL, but NO, the wife insists that this is his rifle !!!!!!!!!!!!CRAP..well..i geuss it'll be one helluva nice first gun for a 10 year old !!!

Now you get yourself a CIL 180 with peep sights to disadvantage yourself and a couple of spinners. Trust me your kid will be in heaven when he kicks your butt.
 
LOL, yeah, i can't wait to see the look on his face !!!...but probably would have been cheaper to buy him 5 old cooey .22's !!!!..oh well, it will still be in my safe for many years to come !!
 
or maybe 7 old cooeys !!hahahaha..he's getting pretty good, an old marlin semi i have with irons he likes to shoot, can group 4" (or so) at 50 yards !..not bad for last summer being his first shooting !
 
All in all a good move. My boys started out with single shot bolt 22's, but if you want to go semi, so be it.

I am both happy & proud that both boys religiously PROVE everything they pick up & pull out of the safe.

The training seemed to work because the oldest boy had his first surprise discharge (primer problem; fired on second hammer drop) a couple of weeks ago...and the round went straight downrange...Good muzzle control.
 
for sure, last winter, i spent probably 2 months going over safety stuff before he pulled the trigger once. i knew he was ready when i handed him a .22 without making sure it was unloaded (obviously it was, and i did it on purpose), and he called me onit !!...thats when he was ready to have the real fun !!!
 
Your son is so lucky and blessed to have a father like you:D

My 20 month old grandson will be starting out in about 5 years with his own Savage MkI Youth single shot. It is already in the safe waiting for the day.
 
Keep the new rifle for yourself, and pass down your Lakefield .22 to him. I think he will appreciate the older .22 knowing it was the same rifle you started with. In time, you could always hand the new one down to him.

Do you know how the 10 year old mind works? I'm sure in another 10 years he will love to have the old lakefield that was his father's first rifle. Right now though I'm sure he would rather have a super cool 10/22 than an old single shot.
 
Told my 11 year old we my have to sell some guns for they don't all fit in the safe. He says sell the Cz 452 varmit which is basically brand new, I'm like what are you talking about, he says its to HEAVY. So I ask him what is better the old Savage 110 308 or the Remington 700 police in 308. The old Savage he pipes up the Remington is to HEAVY. Now I was all excited about these new beauties in the safe but my kid couldn't give a hoot about what these guns are for he just wants to shoot something he can lift and hold somewhat steady. I know all kids are different but thats the experience I had.

he has shot a few of my bolt/semi/pump .22's and has became proficient (i.e. safe and fairly accurate) with all of them, but he likes my marlin semi the best, hence getting him the 10/22
 
my oldest boy who is 11 claimed my Sako Finnfire Range, so it's his, just buy yourself another one, can't put a price on a son/daughter who wants to carry on the tradition. IMHO
