I need a 30-06. Which one?

Ruger american any good? Step up from an axis?

Either the savage 111, the savage axis 2 or weatherby vanguard or something closer to your budget, buy an axis then buy a boyds stock for it, buy a new lighter trigger spring, and polish up the bolt, you will have a nice gun for about 500, might have to get a used axis to fit the budget

I am looking for a 30-06 for my brother in law. He just got his core and his birthday is in April so I want to get him a decent rig. I want something better than an axis but after that I don't know what I should be looking at. I figure around $500 for the rifle and I will let him take care of the glass. I am not sure if this is a realistic budget. I am used to heavy barrel, heavy stock rigs for target so hunting setups are new to me. Thanks

Hi. If I were shopping for an inexpensive, quality, used hunting rifle I'd check out this S&W 1500.

Its 7mm Rem Mag, not 30-06, made by Howa for S&W from '80-'82. Though its a bit off the beaten path as a S&W, the Howa made model 1500 rifle went on to become the Weatherby Vanguard. They are reliable, accurate hunting rigs. Howa did have a safety recall for the bolt sleeve on the 1500. Easy to find details on the net.

If you're stuck on new, there are great deals out there on the T/C Venture.
They have very good reviews, and are built way better than the basement model rifles.
