As I look at my collection of rifles and what I have planned for xmas and bday gifts to myself in the next year I have the 20s 25 30s 35 and 45 cals covered. I feel as though I owe it to myself to acquire a 40cal. I know its not needed at all but I don't care. For factory options and factory brass are my options limited to the ruger in 450/400 and some rifle in 405? I know there's prolly like 30-40 forgotten 40 cals out there but I'm not ready to start making my own brass. Hence commercially available brass is a must
Any ideas?

Are you looking for a .405-.411" caliber? The .416" opens up a bunch of possibilities, and of course there is the .404 Jeffery, which I really like (.423"). The latter is chambered by CZ in their fine Magnum rifle.

If smaller cartidges are fine then consider the .41 Rem Mag. Marlin chambered it for some time in their 1894 - it is a .410"

I'd go with the 450/400 if you want a falling block or double barrel, or 404 Jeffrey if you want a bolt gun, both are classy cartridges. If the .404 was more readily available in the model 70 I likely would have bought one instead of my .375H&H.

.38-40

Ya I'm looking for an actual 40. Not a 416 but thank you. 38-40 sounds like an old lever gun correct?

Yes, It came out in the Winchester 1873 lever action rifle. Colt chambered revolvers for it too. Colt made their Lightning slide action and Remington made their M-14 1/2 slide action too.
The Winchester M92 was chambered for it as was the Marlin M94 and with those strong actions you could get some decent velocities. Some of the old loading manuals list loads as high as 2200 FPS with a 180 jacketed bullet. The late, great Elmer Keith was a fan of the .38-40 in a revolver.
I had a Marlin M94 in .38-40. I only shot plain base lead bullets in it so I never tried the "hot" loads but a 175 gr bullet at @1400-1500 FPS was a great small game/plinking load.

I'd love to try one but I could never afford a rifle like that

The thing is I don't need one. My 45 -70 will do everything I need. I just want to hjave something to play with. I've heard savages being rebarreled to 45acp. Maybe I could have one made for a 40 cal pistol round? I do like that 38-40 idea tho

You don't get a huge number of factory type bullet choices in 40cal. I have a #1 in 450/400, you can load .411 300gr & 350's in it, and 210 gr pistol bullets, or cast your own from 200-400gr, with quite a number of choices in styles. Buffalo Arms has a pretty decent selection of tools for cast 40cal loading. If you go to the 410-411 bore you may need to go to a custom mould to get the sizing dia right, some of the commercial moulds won't make dia up to 411-413 for the 410-411 bore. I ended up getting LBT moulds cut to use 416 gaschecks in 320 and 400gr. A Saeco 740 I have, is not consistent on delivering diameters needed and has never exceeded 411 dia. yet with 4 different blends tried so far.
