I am in need of a new Ontario big game rifle for deer, moose and black bear. I hunt the woods and farm land of Ontario mostly so I am looking for a nice lightweight rifle with a 22" give or take barrel. I was thinking 30-06 would be my best bet for the game and terrain I will be hunting.

I am a big fan of fit/finish and would want something with a good quality walnut stock and steel parts. My budget would be somewhere around $1000 for the gun alone. What would you reccomend???

custom , match barrel std weight but fluted, Pick up a model 70, 700 , etc type action, and a brown stock.
Or get a cooper , kimber , , many others ..
As for the scope, a leupold is best , for light weight , and clear optics, 2x7 , 1.5 x 5 etc...

The all new Ruger M77 hawkeye cammo synyhetic, hammer forge stainless barrel, love the Ruger Mauser action and the L6c trigger, 22" $900+tax add a nice Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40mm B&C , gun metal scope, or the Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x44mm DOA!!!
cheers

Sounds to me like you already have a great start on things. You know roughly what you are looking for, and have a very reasonable budget to work with. I could recomend rifles that work for me, however I recommend you go to a gunshop, and get your hands on a few rifles. Get to know the shop owners and staff. You will get your own feel for the rifle you like, and it will be the start of a great gun shop friendship. Which by the way, only helps you out in the end by ways of deals and such. So for not really answering your question, I hope this helps. Surplusfan.

I should have mentioned earlier though that there are some I would not really recommend for someone that has some money to spend on a rifle. Those rifles are some of the rifle scope package deals. In particular, the remingtons. The only rifle/scope combo package I don't really mind is the Marlin 30-30. However, that is not what you are looking for. Cheers

Seems like you have your criteria set now its just a case of purchase any rifle scope combo in that price range will give years of hard hunting I guess your just going to just go out and try them on for fit just one thing any synthetic stock has it's hollow sound and some look cheap but they shoot .

Stevens 200 or Savage, in 270 Win, scoped with at a bare minimum a 3200 Bushenell, 2-7 or 3-9, I'd personally put a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 on it in anything but Weaver mounts.

Get a Remington 700 stainless synthetic and keep the change from your $1500.
I may start a fight but I think generally speaking it's the best shooting factory bolt gun
out of the box. As well as very tough and reliable.

Ya, those Weaver mounts are pure garbage. That's why it's the most copied system out there.

The I fixed it for you.
Should have read rings, more specifically the top mount ones, the Grand Slams are OK, but any ring if a wee bit over tightened and will crush or crease a scope is not worth jack in my books.

X2!!!
Not A Dam Thing Wrong With Weaver!!!

have a read. of my post above.

Weaver top mount rings have ruined more scopes over the years, most garage gun plumbers know nothing about torque screwdrivers.

Ever wonder why those wonderfull Waever rings never see use in any shooting competition?

I would be looking for something with an "all weather" synthetic stock and stainless steel parts. I am a big fan of fit/finish and would want something with a good quality synthetic stock, nothing that feels hollow or cheap.

My budget would be somewhere around $1500 MAX for the gun alone as it would be my only big game rifle. What would you reccomend???

:eek::confused:

I'd go with a model 700 BDL SS, not the sps. These rifles just feel right to me. Then you could save some $$$ and put a really nice scope on it and stay within your budget. That said, the Sakos sure are nice.

Me, I'd go a Rem 700, Ruger 77 or Tikka T3 stainless synthetic in .30-06 as my choice. Top it with a Bushnell Elite 3200 or Leupold VXII 3-9.... ;)

Weaver rings....

As for the "Weaver mounts" issue.... Personally, I like Weaver bases with steel Burris "Z" rings or B-Square "Lynx" rings. I agree the standard Weaver rings suck as they are hard on scope tubes. And thus, I shy away from using them.

Totally agree. I hate the old style Weaver scope biter rings. I wrecked a new Leupold once with them. There lots out there that's waaay better.

Put a synthetic stock of your choosing on a remington M700 mountain rifle LSS. I love them, just about the perfect all around hunting rifle (IMHO). At 6 1/2lbs they're Light enough to carry all day, heavy enough that they don't kick too hard. Well balanced, points well, pretty accurate.
