I need a big game bolt action rifle...

Have you looked at the Savage Precision Carbine in .308? Reasonably-priced, accurate as hell, 40 inch overall length, 20" barrel, 7 pounds. The barrelled action is blue, not stainless. I'd use it in the rain.

Lots of good suggestions on rifles and calibers. You certainly won't go wrong with a Tikka. 30-06 allows you to shoot 200 grain (or more) bullets for larger game.
My 2 cents for optics.... don't go too high on magnification. If you're going with a variable scope get something that has a low setting like a 1.75x - 6x , 1.5x - 5x or 2x - 7x.
My "do everything" (well almost) rifle is a Steyr Prohunter Mountain in .308 with a Trijicon Accupoint 1.25x to 4x scope. The trijicon is priced about the same as the Vari-x III Leupolds and has an illuminated reticle that does not require batteries.

I just picked up a rem 700 BDL SS in .30-06 and put a Bushnell Elite 3200 on it..Looks pretty sweet, got a good deal on the rifle so couldn't pass up.:D
Looing forward to shooting it now in another little bit when work slows down.

As said...these just feel right..and fits like a glove..

just picked up my fisrt tikka in 338 federal. i went with a stainless lite for $700
here is a quick summary so far of pros and cons

pros

-i shoot 210 gr handloads at 2600 fps and rifle handles the recoil well considering gun so light. shot about 80 rounds so far

-i use it for close quarters deer moose and bear, carry it in one hand all day no problem ( unlike my ruger no1 or the sako which are over 8lbs).

-since its a brush gun i only have a fixed 4x burris scope but can still managed groups around 1 1/2 inch ( gun capable of better but x hair cover 2 inches at 100yds)

-trigger breaks better than any remmy, ruger or winchester ( havent tried new savage trigger so cant say)

-bolt smooth as silk

-gun completley disasembles with a slotted srewdriver. (2 screws a twist of the bolt shroud and bolt falls apart easily) in less than a minute with one tool !!

cons

-safety can stick if you accidentally lift bolt handle with safety on. but a few repetitions of this procedures reduce the stickyness

-lots of plastic parts but i got this as my go anywhere for long walks in s**t weather gun.

-dont buy tikka moutns or rings , i went with burris mounts and rings for 28$ instead of tikka's @ $90

-wood stock was not available when i purchased

Still

So I still am in need of a bolt rifle for deer next month, I carried my lever all week for moose. Here are the rifles I am thinking about in 30-06.

Ruger M77 Hawkeye
Winchester M70 Featherweight (New)
Remington 700 BDL
Tikka T3 Hunter

Which one???

I would try one of the new Winchester Model 70's in whatever style you like (featherweight is interesting). Cant really go wrong with 30-06 .

Note on rings that dont' crush scopes...Try the burris zee signature rings that come with the inserts, Im impressed.

you will not go wrong with the 30-06 in any gun. Rem, savage, win, Tikka, sako,,, the choice is yours. I find ruger to be heavy, but great quality...

Other notibles 270, 308, 284, 260 what ever you fancy will kill game.

Still need one...

Ok so I carried my Marlin 30-30 all last year and put off buying a bolt rifle in 30-06 until NOW. I have $1000 to spend on a rifle with the same criteria as the original post. The rifle must have:

-30-06 (nothing else)
-22" barrel give or take 1"
-Walnut stock
-7.5lbs is the heaviest

I recently picked up a New Ruger M-77 (hawkeye I think?) for my wife and I find the action a little grainy and the safety quite stiff.....hopefully it all gets smoother over time.....I like the free rings.

How you about you pick up a Winchester FW and tell us all about it ? :)
