"...I dont know the back roads..." Think topographical map. You should be able to buy them for the area you're hunting from your MNR and some retail places.

Go to huntingbc.ca

There is a Vancouver Island hunting forum there. Lots of great guys. there are about 10 billion backroads on the Island!

Riley if your ever up around the Pt Hardy area let me know. Like Gate says check out HBC. There's quite a few lads closer to you in the central and south island area....

Gatehouse,

Im sure the guy with the fish is one helluva fella, but please put the other avatar back.

I was the elected spokesman for CGN on this topic....

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. 8)

After hunting for many years all over the Island, I can say that you'll have more success if you hunt nearer rather than further from a rural area.....just make sure it's safe and legal to discharge a firearm there. You can drive and hike the back 40 all you like, and you'll find alot of bears, cougar scat and wolf scat, but not many blacktails! The smart [and living] deer are right in your own back yard. I once read a land management report that singled out the extensive logging-road access combined with lack of old growth forests as a main cause for the steady deer population decline on the Island. The animals that prey on deer also use the roads to hunt their prey [ black bears catching fawns in the spring ] and consequently, the deer no longer have an inaccessable sanctuary in which to escape their predators. The cougars, bears and wolves can get to any part of the deer's range with ease. Our blacktails have a very small home range, and their hapy to live their whole lives with in a very small area provided they have what they need to subsist. It' doesn't take much to wipe them out......just ask any oldtimer who hunted in the 40's and 50's, they be able to recount stories of seeing herds of deer around. Gone gone gone. There's no where left for them to subsist but in your back yard.
Like I said, study the regs, get a topo map and start scouting for sign. When you find a good area you'll know. Find the does and the bucks will be close by come November. You might consider a tree stand. Climb up pre-dawn and cover those travel routes. You'll find em.
The back 40 is great if you're looking to fill a bear tag.

Sounds good Riley.

On fall bears, if you are in a low lieing area near any river or creek that has spawning salmon and the fish are running (any time now) you might want to pass on any bear you see. They get pretty rank when they're feeding on rotten fish. If you're up in the high country away from the salmon flats and the bear looks healthy, I wouldn't hesitate to take an island fall blackie.

High country is also where the best deer hunting is around here at least. Glass the ridges and mountain tops. Look for sign. If you can find them this is likely where the bigger bucks will be. Good luck to ya 8)

Last reports I had is tha the deer are coming back in the back country (ie, rifle hunting areas). Lots of deer in the Beauforts, east of Port and there's been some big bucks taken in the areas between Comox and Buttle lakes. Watch Strathcona Park boundaries. Access is the big problem these days. If your up for it, climbing into heli-logged area's are good bets, no worry there of some lazy slob in a quad driving up behind you and ruining a stock.

im hunting in the higher areas and the bear crap that i see on the road is all full of berries so i think they should be fine but i did not know.
i also herd that the deer are comeing back in some reagons but i just got to find them in my area.
what do you all think of tree stands ive never hunted with em but i have found them is there any tips to help me bild them.

Sounds like some quality bears where your hunting Riley

I've never bothered with tree stands. But if I find an area with lots of fresh sign and want to still hunt I just find a high stump or other place with a good view to sit down for a while.

Back to bisonhd, glad to hear your hearing promising news as well. 8)
