So I want a new 1911 and I am thinking along the lines of the commander. I want something pretty nice though and was wondering which way is more worth the cash. Is it better to just buy a high end 1911 or buy a norinco and have a gunsmith tune it with new parts, trigger job, etc. If you recommend high end which models? Budget limit is within $1000ish give or take but I always prefer cheaper. More bang for the buck. thanks

If you have a budget like that, I would just buy quality right off the bat. If I had $1000 for a commander right now, I would be looking to STI at the moment. The Ranger is looking pretty good to me these days...though a SA Operator would also be pretty swell for a little extra. Best of luck -- and don't forget the pictures when you find her.

Kimber or Springfield. They look more "traditonal" and have good reputations. Their lower end models are both below $1,000.

No matter you buy a Norinco or any other makes, don't modify the gun in a hurry. Shoot plenty of rounds down range first, and have a feel of it. You may later decide to just sell it to get a better model. This usually makes more sense than spending $$$ on modifying a cheap gun. Nobody likes to buy heavily modified guns.

After shooting it you will know whether you need a beavertail safety, better sights, ambi thumb safety or a trigger job. Maybe none of these is necessary at all...

The Kimber CustomII in stainless can be had for less than a grand.
The other good choice would be an STI Spartan.

There aren't a ton of options that I'm aware of for commander length 1911's right now, especially at that price range. There's a good deal on a used S&W SW1911 Compact with scandium frame at the Saskatoon Wholesale Sports. If I remember right it was the pistol, two holsters, two mag pouches and four mags for $1050. It seemed to be in great shape.

Your other options are Dan Wesson CCB, STI Ranger, a couple Para's and the odd Kimber. Of those, the closest to your price range will be the STI. The rest will be too much unless you can steal them on the EE.

Why do you need a new one? Did your old one break?

I'm just sayin'...

;)

With that budget, skip the norinco unless you want more than one pistol(who doesn't). Most in the $1000 range are quality firearms. Handle as many as you can and go with what feels best.

A $1,000 budget will allow you to build a pretty good Norinco to your specifications. It makes more sense to start with a less expensive donor gun, as the gunsmith will be replacing or modifying the same parts. You will take a hit selling just about any custom gun, so you are just as well to keep your overall cost low with the donor gun. The advantage of going this route is getting exactly what you want.

If you want to go off the shelf, the best fits with your budget would be the STI Spartan, Kimber, or Springfield Armory. The only drawback is that you will have to settle for a 5" gun. I don't know of anyone other than Norinco offering a commander length gun for $1,000 or less.

No, but I bought a COLT Special Combat Government from him and like it a lot.
He's the only one who is bringing COLTs in and I think he should be encouraged. They are great guns at a decent price.:)

Cool. Have you posted pictures somewhere? Have a link?

Almost all the options you guys are mentioning are well over the $1k budget. And they are even worse once you add on taxes. The only ones I've found that NEW will end up at or slightly under the $1K limit are the Norc and the STI Spartan.

I was in the same place as you and did some extensive research on the subject.

As a result I bought a new Dan Wesson Commander Classic .45 last year and am a totally happy customer. Check it out on www.cz-usa.com. For the money this gun offers a lot, including Trijicon tritium night sights. Research the reviews, both amateur and professional.

If you're going to go this way I suggest you put a deposit down and order one now because info is coming to light that they may cost over US$1400 next year (they are $1200 and change right now US dollars MSRP on the website).

Don't let those numbers scare you - find out what you can get it for here in Canada. I and a friend placed a double order with Walter at CGN sponsor ArmsEast who delivered with flying colours, at a time when others were back ordered by many many weeks.

Spend a bit more now when it's worth it, get a lot more always.

I would rather buy a high(er) end commander than pump money into a Norinco, every time.
