I need a new rifle

There was a thread on another forum last week discussing rifles that had been flipped (bought then sold) in a very short time. I got a chuckle when I read that a large portion of those rifle were 300 RUMs. Some were purchased new and sold the next day given the large amount of recoil they dish out.

I would (and did) buy a 30/06 or 270 instead. At my age, I don't have to show off anymore. :)

If you haven't fired a 300 ultra mag before, do so before investing in one. They are no fun to shoot and in reality a waste of powder and recoil for the velocity gained over a 300 win mag.

First of all I would make sure you can handle the recoil but if you can its a sweet caliber the poors mans Weatherby Mag. I have no issue with the recoil personally any 30 caliber super mag rocks 300 wby mag, 30/378 wby, 300 RUM there are all great for long range killing they hit super hard at both ends. But giver on getting one I personal would just buy a used one that has been shot 20 times on the EE here at CGN buy it shoot it.

buy trhe 300RUM! you can shoot moose at 900m!!! Soooooo FLAT! 150gr boattail gameking!!!11!!11!! just aim for the hump!!! make sure you have a good scope! like a 4-12 bushnell banner! good for moose at 900m! the guy at the gun store told me so!

I actually heard a story just like that this weekend from a friend in Ont.

Turns out one of the crew he hunts with bought a Savage 300RUM with an cheep something x16x50mm scope for those 800yd shots on moose. He was serious!

800 yd shots on Moose in Ontario? That must be when they are walking across Hwy 401 ;)

I've literally seen personally, at least TWO TIMES when the boneheads at Ottawa LeBaron's have advised guys they "need" a Savage in .300RUM to hunt white-tail, because ".30-06 is obsolete and wounds too many animals". :runaway:

I have a 700LSS in 300 RUM (Grey Laminated/Stainless, 4200 2.5-10X40). Recoil is not an issue, the cartridge IS incredibly flat shooting for a 30, and while I have never stretched it to 1000m, hits on 1 gallon water jugs at 700 in the pit near our moose camp are the norm.

My RUM will be hitting the EE in the near future, but not because of the "scary recoil", but rather because we have switched camps and now instead of big cuts its swamps ans rivers. Anybody have a 350 mag they wanna trade?

That must be the same guy that tells people he shoots turkeys at 100yds with a 3.5" 12ga.

30.06 still does and will do the job. I would think in Ontario it would be a little worrisome trying to take out a moose at 900 metres as there will likely be 3 to 4 crews between you and the meat.

get a 300 RUM if ya want one...there's no better reason to get a new rifle...he11, I don't normally need any reason...but I've killed more game with my 300 Win than all others combined and every thing I shot could have just as easily been taken with a 308...this year I'll hunt with a 7-08 and a 30-06 and maybe a 25-06.......the 300 Win hasn't been in the field for three seasons now....
